Usually I do not criticize combat soldiers, marines, etc because my experience is that on any given day we can be the hero, coward or the average Joe. it depends on the mood, the thoughts in your head or even a letter from home. I also do not criticize decision made in combat since I made good and bad ones, sometimes at the same time. I do not criticize the level of stress each one can handle since again on any given day...

However, I do criticize the expenditure of resources and lives to rescue a doomed man. In 1968 at Khe Sanh the Green Beret outpost was being over run. The Marine commander knew sending anyone to rescue them was a suicidal mission and he wasn't going to endanger 20-30 lives attempting to save 2 - 3 men. Thankfully the men survived and it was the right decision. it broke everyone's heart but it was the right decision.

Him leaving his post was a bad decision. Going out after a deserter was a bad decision by the field commanders. Trading 5 enemy combatants for him was a bad decision.

I say let it go. War sucks and no one I know was perfect in it. Just do not welcome him home as a hero nor punish him for a dumb decision.

Some of the men who served with Bergdahl are speaking out. Go read the milblogs and you'll find some outrage and real anger. Bergdahl deserted in a war zone. His reasons don't matter. He deserted his unit. Men were killed searching for him. That's the bottom line. He deserves to face a court-martial. Almost assuredly he won't.

Obama just put the price on American lives: 5 Taliban/Haqqani commanders and possibly an unknown sum of cash. Traitor.

Bergdahl was a private when he went missing and was promoted to the rank of specialist in June 2010. He was promoted in June 2011 to the rank of sergeant.

He got these two PROMOTIONS while they knew he deserted, and now their giving him another promotion later in June of this year.

Susan Rice came out today stating that Bowe Bergdahl served his country with Honor and Distinction. He is due to get another Promotion (to E6) later this week just before coming home.
