Option 1: Inform Congress and ask for immediate action. Result: GOP insists Obamacare be halted as part of the package, rails at WH for refusing to cooperate.

Option 2: Assume there's no hurry despite the indications, and go through the 30-day notification procedure. Result: GOP spends 29 days making pious speeches, then insists Obamacare be halted as part of the package. Dumps on Obama for moving too slowly, ultimately blames Bergdahl's death on him, and shifts campaign strategy from Benghazi to this new "failure of leadership."

Option 3: Act immediately and notify Congress after Bergdahl has been freed. Result: GOP demonizes Obama as a dictator because . . . . Well, you read the article, so why go on?

Yet again, the GOP had another opportunity to put real human values ahead of its commitment to unseat Obama at any cost, and blew it. I hope the rest of the voting public is keeping score; I know I am.

We need a new GOPeee
I find it hard to believe these people represent us.

Secret Squirrel • 9 years ago

They don't. They represent their own self interests.

Danny DeGuira • 9 years ago

They represent the BIG donor. I wish people would quit calling it a "FREE Election".

Robert Norwood • 9 years ago

No big donors in your corner like, for one a Mexican telecom giant? Check the lists people - money owns you.

True American • 9 years ago

Whats obamas self interest? Is it same as harry reids? I just watched a video where Obama said he was a muslim? No way that can be. he is best president ever

lol they don't -- if there is one thing this country is missing it is proper representation

Eric Cartman • 9 years ago

So, Ronald Reagan was right selling weapons, right?

Roger Perrone • 9 years ago

Was presidential candidate Reagan also right to send and envoy to the Iranians to let them know they'd get a better deal from him than they would from Pres. Carter?

J Wood • 9 years ago

Bit different, Regan was not president at the time.

C. Morris • 9 years ago

I agree with you. The GOP is the 'sick man' of American politics and has been for a long long time. Ike was the last decent individual
GOPer prez, but under him, Nixon, Joe McCarthy the Dulles bros. all sick.
TR was the last real Republican and he left the party it made him so nauseous. He knew the GOP sickness had
become morally fatal.

John L • 9 years ago

Of course, we approved it. Given the circumstances, it was the right thing to do.

Richard Arthur • 9 years ago

Who approved it? It was against the law to deal with the Contras and there was no exigent emergency to do otherwise. It was, in the words of a certain Reagan appointee, "A neat idea (of mine)". We aided Iranians. What kind of friend were they then or now? Reagan later stated the HE DID NOT authorize this weapons swap - so there was zero presidential oversight. Reagan may be blameless for his personal actions but should have been responsible for those appointees who acted in his stead. None were fired or reprimanded.
Speaking of Reagan, what about the Marine presence in Lebanon which accomplished nothing, had no real objective, and resulted in HUNDREDS of deaths? You should remember that at that time there was no hue and cry for an investigation - only sadness on all sides for something that went wrong.

Only if the Republicans feel the Fast and Furious was OK too. After all what's good for the goose is good for the gander. If a person feels they can do something and another person cannot that makes them a bigot. Cheers. :)

You can go all the way back to Caesar in Gaul if you wish but how does any of that change the present and your president?

oh, how impressive, you're not just a petulant poser, you're really knowledgeable.

look everyone! he's heard of Julius Caesar.

I agree, Guest.
I think we should have bagged Inhofe and McKeon and sent them. Imagine their reaction at the hands of the Taliban! Hilarious. Unfortunately we
don't get to see these kinds of outcomes.
However, the GOP is looking for a way to attack BHO on this in any manner they can imagine. Give them two weeks before they are calling
for Bowe's arrest and trial, then add the whole affair to their impeachment list of charges, which will come if they take the Senate back this
November. These people are not done and intend to do whatever it takes to ruin BHO, even if it destroys individuals or the nation.

Robert Norwood • 9 years ago

Personally, you can have your deserter - you need heroes. Problem is, in your culture you just don't have them. Got to know what that entails before you can claim one.
And his dad? Speaking of diving and decompression - I think he came up a little too fast himself.

Indy AZ • 9 years ago

As am I, and I'm still doing community service for "back in the day" when I thought they had a brain and voted for some of them. Yep, old Ron not only was selling weapons, he was selling them after congress told him he couldn't do that and then he lied about it when he got caught. Impeachable offense for real, but everyone loved old Ron's 24 Mule Team Borax days and his monkey movie, so he gets a pass.

funbobby51 • 9 years ago

the united states will not, strike that, will only occasionally negotiate with terrorists!

Danny DeGuira • 9 years ago

With sanctions!

True American • 9 years ago

Yea sanctions that will not ever be public knowledge

Robert Norwood • 9 years ago

Oh here we go - NPR liberals having one of their little grab fests - we know what you guys are grabbing. Let's ignore the fact that Bergdahl deserted and trading those cut throats for him was a good deal. Have your little laugh children, when they've been recycled back into the action what excuses will you make up then? You should listen to yourselves, your like children.
When you have a moment, come with something intelligent; your little over used quips won't get it done. Well, in your world maybe.

True American • 9 years ago

options there are no options he will just do exacty what he wants. He is the king less you forget

Guest • 9 years ago

There is a reason laws exist. One of the reasons is that people often tend to think with their hearts rather than their heads.

1) Bergdahl was a deserter who was ashamed to be an American. Why release terrorist masterminds that other soldiers shed blood to capture, so as to free another person who is ashamed of his country?

2) Why spend millions of dollars to hunt down and kill a single terrorist just so you can release five?

3) There is a US soldier in jail in Mexico who served honorably in the military. Why isn't the US going to such great lengths to secure his release? What about the American political prisoner held in Iran? Why pick a US deserter out of the whole lot?

I wonder what is worse, demonizing Obama or deifying him.

Guest • 9 years ago

Got very little to do with Obama, chum: Dubya or Mitt would've made the same call. His faults or transgressions as a soldier have nothing to do with America's policy toward POWs, and at this point they're nothing more than allegations anyway. If there's a case against him, as a soldier he has a guaranteed right to a court martial. That's the way it works in these United States, and your liking it or not liking it carries zero weight. Zippo.

Blank Slate • 9 years ago

"Got very little to do with Obama, chum: Dubya or Mitt would've made the same call."

I wonder...

I think history will show that Bush had numerous opportunities to negotiate with terrorists over US captives and used how many?... what did you say?... Zippo. Would they have broken the law and bypassed congress? You wish they would have.

But you're being true to a common theme though: Very little done by the Obama administration seems to have anything to do with Obama. Even in this case when he held a press conference with the parents afterwards to celebrate his latest 'achievement.'

"That's the way it works in these United States." - Are you referring to the rule of law? It would be comical if you were.

True American • 9 years ago

liberals always have an answer for why they broke the law

J Dubs • 9 years ago

quote the law.

True American • 9 years ago

like the law he is implementing right now if it suits him. the one where he guarantees your energy bill will skyrocket. Like the law the says the irs shall not be bias. Like the law says you shall not lie to congress about benhgazi, like the law says illegal aliens shall be deported. this administration is a total failure top to bottom. Like the law no one shall give away top secret information such as letting the terrorist know who is watching them in afganastan

True American • 9 years ago

the law is no gitmo detainee shall be let go without 30 days notice to congress. Signed last year by your dear leader. But hey we all know he can ignore any law he wants.

J Dubs • 9 years ago

I was just wondering if you had actually read the law or if you were just regurgitating. I think you've answered sufficiently.

Meanwhile, two Republican lawmakers [California Rep. Howard McKeon, and Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe] are claiming that President Obama broke a law that requires the president to give Congress 30 days notice before transferring any Guantánamo detainees.

I take it that they didn't want to get our soldier back. Or just didn't care. Or were more interested in bashing Obama than anything else. Good support for our military, political worms. What failures you are.

They'll try to turn it into another "scandal", probably call it "Bergdahlzigate".

Bergdahlzigate!

What a hateful comment. There are legitimate concerns to trading one man's life for the others who may be captured or killed as a result of the trade. Everyone is happy for this young man and his family but the result may very well be that there are unhappy outcomes for many others.

In the name of clearing up misinformation, these Guantanamo detainees are not released out into the public. They will be under Qatar's custody rather than guantanamos. They are still in captivity. Read the whole story before assuming things.
