Great article! One quick question - Is there a way for me to share same windows store application on same PC with multiple users by installing it just once? Let's assume that it's a free application. This saves me disk space and avoids un necessary duplication

Anand Khanse • 11 years ago

No.

You are forgetting the Registry keys which the app may be installing. :)

Rajendra Dixit • 11 years ago

Thanks Anand for quick response. In previous versions of windows while installing (conventional) applications, there was choice whether to install it for the logged in user or for all users. Is there something similar possible on Windows 8 while installing apps from Windows store?

Anand Khanse • 11 years ago

I don't think there is such an option.

Sonali • 10 years ago

Hi Anand,
I also want to install the application once which can be used via different logins.
I was thinking to change the install location so that the same App content (xml file) is accessible for App administrator to edit and App user to view.
Is this a feasible solution?
Can I automate registry changing task through Powershell in my metro App Powershell (.ps1) file?

ECannady • 10 years ago

This worked for 8.0, so thank you! Now when I try it for 8.1 it doesn't work. Is there another workaround?

Anand Khanse • 10 years ago

Hmm... thanks for pointing this out .... I will have a look and revert if I find something. :)

Dominique • 10 years ago

Please email me when you find something. - dsants@gmail.com I have been working on this thing for 3 days and can't figure it out. I'm going back to windows 8 since I only have 120gb SSD for my windows and another hard drive for my apps / programs but in 8.1 I cant change the app directory =(

macbrew • 10 years ago

Yes I have the same problem.
Specifically have a separate partition for programs.
Quickly finding with Windows 8.1 that they limit your control of everything as much as possible. Fine if you're running a tablet, but if you're on a PC and want some flexibility for whatever reason, the option just doesn't seem to be there!

jason • 10 years ago

Hi - did you find out how to do this in 8.1? It looks like the registry tree structure is different in 8.1. I can find Apps...

jason • 10 years ago

... I meant that I can't find Appx in 8.1...

achint • 10 years ago

hi Mr Anand , I hv tried all the available methods to change the default location in windows 8.1 but still coming with the error on downloading. is there any other ways for 8.1

Is there a way to do this with Windows 8.1?

The Conservative Atheist • 9 years ago

The registry values did not change between 8 and 8.1. The location of the folder is here: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps. It isn't called Appx anymore. I was able to change the location and installed an app and it went to the new location. Hope this helps.

Devansh Diwanji • 9 years ago

Does it still work after getting windows updates ? doesn't work for me.

The Conservative Atheist • 9 years ago

I do not know. I hardly use windows anymore. I'm migrating to Linux now.

can we save windows store downloaded setup files??
ex: windows 8.1 update setup file, etc.

Anand Khanse • 9 years ago

No, but you can update them offline. Will write a post today later about it.

Hi, I have tested use of Windows PowerShell script (on Windows 8.1) from Microsoft, here is link: https://gallery.technet.mic...

Use these script, before use this script is very important set permission for WindowsApps folder and register tree HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Appx for Administrators security groups.

After I have applied these script, new installed application are located in new folder C:\Windows8Apps

Marco Morgado • 8 years ago

Hi, does it work Fine on 8.1 ?It works on another path as D:\ ?

viresh • 9 years ago

hey..can v download d apps fr windows store in our pc..den transfer dem to ova lumia phone and play dem??

Anand Khanse • 9 years ago

No, you cannot.

chiffmonkey • 9 years ago

This is some serious Linux level farting around just to change a damn download location on a supposedly "user friendly" device! I've got 3 different micro sd cards I dump apps to and this is ridiculous if I have to do this every time I want to switch which one I'm installing to!
Far easier would be if someone just knows where you can find the apps outside the store. Specifically in this case Project Spark.

I am trying to download and install an app that i downloaded from my browser but i still keep on receiving a message that "this app cannot be installed in your pc". Please what do i do??

Anand Khanse • 9 years ago

how to share same windows store application on same pc with multiple users?

Drek • 8 years ago

I previously stated that you could change your default Windows 10 App install directory and repository directory this way. I take it all back. It is a great deal more complicated than just changing a couple of registry settings and moving the files. I should have known better. I do not recommend doing this to anyone unless you really know what you are doing and don't mind taking the chance that you might completely screw up your Windows 10 installation.

Anand Khanse • 8 years ago

Windows 10 also offers a setting: http://www.thewindowsclub.c...

Drek • 8 years ago

There you go, I always have to do things the hard way... :)

Drek • 8 years ago

See my first note in this thread.

Raistlin • 8 years ago

sooooo.... I am running Windows 10 and my also has both "Move" and "New apps will be saved to" is both greyed out.
Any fix to this or how do I get it to work?

Tore Bordal • 8 years ago

Didn't work for me. I changed the PackageRoot data to D:\WindowsApps. Now when I try to install an app on Store, it just says "Try again, error 0x80070005"
