You're telling me my puppy needs 6 cups of water a day??????? 1/2 cup every two hours in a 24 hr period is 6 cups of water! No wonder he's been l8cking the bathtub, the bathroom floor after we shower, any little drop of water he finds! I've been giving him a 20oz bottle a day because he's 5 months and 3-5 pounds (more than the recommemded 30ccs per pound And he's still hunting for water. I'll try this and see if that stops. I thought something was wrong with him. He seemed obsessed with water.

My friend has a rottweiller that he keeps in a travel cage, not a crate, for 15 hours per day every day Is this considered animal cruelty. The dog is in the cage from 6 oclock am until 9 oclock pm

Alaya • 10 years ago

yes, it is cruel and inhumane, especially for such a large dog. I would call local humane soc and see what can be done

Danny B. • 9 years ago

Snitches get stitches. At least in my neighborhood.

Rayshawn • 9 years ago

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!

Brian • 10 years ago

You should report your friend to the authorizities or put him in that cage for 15 hours, what ever one you think will work!

Danny B. • 9 years ago

Bill never mentioned calling in the Heat. I always find the mental condition of those who immediately resort to "cries to authority" to be in question.

JDM • 9 years ago

In this case a "crying to authorities" may help a neglected dog, or, in fact -save its life. Save your "snitches/stiches" BS for the hood.

Tiffany Avice Rívera • 10 years ago

I personally think it's gross neglect.

My vet and I are currently trying to figure out why my dog drinks so much.

We have ruled out a number of things, but I was surprised to learn that there is such a thing as psychogenic polydipsia.

I was asked to measure how much my dog wanted to drink in a day and the amount was excessive to the point that I thought he would become toxic.

So, yea, not all dogs will just drink what they need. I'm glad I never put an automatic watering in. I had seriously thought of a pig watered device in the yard.

Dawn Mello • 11 years ago

Just pay attention, that is all you can do. Before or right after a walk, please watch how much water your dog drinks. Common sense to never allow them to over drink. I watch my dogs and when they are still drinking I say no more and they stop. They to me are like my kids, so pay attention.

Since there's no byline, I'm guessing this wasn't written by Dr. Barachas? Most advice I've ever read says dogs should generally have free access to clean, fresh water at all times, unless otherwise directed for medical reasons. I wonder how common over-drinking would be to the point a dog would go into toxicity (like the occasional misguided distance runner who forces him or herself to drink too much because of paranoia about not drinking enough)? It would seem that any dog drinking excessively or who seems thirsty all the time needs a medical exam asap, because likely it's an early warning of an underlying medical condition like diabetes or kidney disease. . . . Also I've never heard of a "lick water bottle" for horses--I've seen many kinds of horse waterers, but not a "bottle"--the only thing I'm picturing is a hamster bottle type thing . . .. . .. for the most part horses also need access to clean water at all times (except when limited perhaps immediately after a hard work) and horses, unlike dogs and cats, suck water up through pursed lips . . .. so I can't figure how a lick system would get them enough water . . . . I wonder if the author could link to a picture of what he/she means.

I leave water out all the time and Clover drinks that normally, but she LOVES anyone else's water. She's even managed to teach herself to hold a water bottle between her paws, take off the cap, and pour it in her mouth.

btowler • 11 years ago

We live in a place with very hard water. The dish drainer proves it as does the shower. We rent so we will not be putting in a treatment system. We use a filter picture for our own water and I wonder if we should be doing this for the dog also. Is mineral filled tap water ok for dogs? No one seems to really know. He also loves to eat snow and drink from the streams when we are on walks. I would be really happy with some good advice on this. Mainly he seems to drink after his am outing and again after dinner.

disqus_5IU6KwLCfI • 9 years ago

Hi, I too live where the water is not that great, I do not drink it from the tap, I boil it 1st,and mostly for the dog,he likes the water now that I got a filter unit for the faucet, the flavor packets have a bit too much sodium in it.

Set • 11 years ago

Where can I get these flavor packets?

"There are flavor packets such as chicken, bacon and beef that you can add to your dog's water to make it more tempting."

Katie • 11 years ago

This! Would love to know where to purchase...

psmommy • 11 years ago

How can you tell if your dog is dehydrated if you have a shar pei with a wrinkly neck? I am worried my dog doesn't drink as much as she should, but I don't want to add the flavoring or broth if she is properly hydrated.

Dawn Mello • 11 years ago

Ask your Vet.

Meghan Lodge • 11 years ago

Good points. We have a huge water bowl in our kitchen with a 5 gallon tank on it for our pets. They also have a self-waterer hooked up to the faucet outside. I can see where so many of us might not think about just how much water our pets need!

Lexi • 11 years ago

I love baby cats they are adorable I have one

Billy • 11 years ago

My dog is 3 years old and doesn't drink a lot of water

AliceCollins • 11 years ago

Hmm, I usually leave water out, but I clean the bowl and re-fill after long walks/romps in the backyard, but otherwise she doesn't seem to be under or over drinking.

PurplePandaPropoganda • 11 years ago

My Sputnik only eats and drinks if I'm standing right over him. If I walk to do something else, even if its in the same room, he stops eating and drinking and lays down beside his bowl or follows me. Why? How do I get him to eat and drink on his own?
Worried about dehydration the most.

chicpoodle • 11 years ago

I give my dogs a good amount of water after walks, play, and anything that would work up thirst. But I generally leave the water dish out so they can drink freely.

Melissajanejohn@yahoo.com • 11 years ago

Good advice! So next time Biscuit goes to the vet will have her checked. Biscuit has fresh water at all times and she does drink alot. Seems I'm always giving her fresh water, but Biscuit is a large dog.

kiminela70 • 12 years ago

My dog ALWAYS seems thirsty. He will choose his water before a treat everytime. I want to make sure he is getting plenty of water but I am not sure if he has a health issue or if I am just not giving him enough. He is a large breed, about 75lbs at 8mths old. He loves ice cubes. anyone have experience with large breed puppies and how much water works for your dog?

SusieQ • 11 years ago

You might want to bring it up with your Vet. That was one of the first symptoms my dog showed before she was diagnosed with Diabetes. Cataracts in a non-senior dog are another sign of diabetes.

San Diego Puppy • 12 years ago

Excellent nutrition preparation is necessary for a dog's health, and also right hydration is an essential part of this preparation. What is the best way to supervise on my dog’s water drinking?

Wenders • 12 years ago

I fostered a Rottie who was an under drinker, so to encourage him to drink more water, say after a walk or if he's heavily panting, I'd add a tiny bit of chicken broth. All it takes is a couple of drops and he goes for the water. I had the same problem with my cat when he was sick, so I did the broth trick and it worked like a charm.

ty • 12 years ago

My dogs get clean water everyday. Water is one of the best things you can give your dog. And very cheap

my puppy is a shepoo now 5 mos old. What human food is totally wrong for him? He is a small eater and got into the treat habit while I was housebreaking him. I don't want to do anything to upset his tummy as he weighs about 7#

I found the Dog WaterTower works great for my Shitzu. I can see exactly how much he is drinking and make sure he doesn't over or under drink. Plus - its really clean and the water doesn't get all over his face and the floor. You don't have to have a cage to hang it. We have used it by the bed, outside and in the kitchen. Its really portable and he loves it. http://www.etsy.com/listing...

Re: Over-drinkers
Our dog was diagnosed with Cushings Disease partly because of his immense increase in drinking water.

www.aquaread.co.uk • 12 years ago

To ensure accessibility for years to come, the drawback water from an environment should not surpass its organic replacement rate.
