Lovely evening in Charlo. Where are the owls?

Is there any way to put the cam back even just a bit to see a few more trees in case they do show up?? I know that this cam won't be here much longer, but our Hootie's probably won't go back to their nest...

meadow • 3 years ago

Just wanted to give a "heads up" about the LEO/Long Eared Owl cam, which is up and running now... Mom has been shredding prey so that means at least one owlet is hatched, ;) Hope to see you there and all of our owl/osprey cams and the other almost 200 cams, lol, ;) Love you, xoxoxo!!

Thank you Liberty for your update. I'm late seeing it as I wasn't tuning in for the Highlights. It's wonderful to see the owlets as they look now. And so sweet to see the two younger ones huddling together. These owls really have sweet family lives.

Tina Charles • 3 years ago

Thank you, Liberty, on the updates of this sweet GHO family. I had to chuckle when I saw the oldest owlet, he must be in those awkward teenage years of an owls age. :) Thanks again, Liberty!

Hello All!

Just want to update you on a couple things. First, try as we might, we haven’t been able to get the cam live again. It wasn’t our intention to switch to highlights so quickly, and it was purely coincidental that it happened so soon after the last owl fledged. We apologize for this. While this cam will be relocated soon, we were hoping to observe a couple weeks of post-fledge behavior – but sometimes things don’t go according to plan.

I can report, however, that the entire family is doing well! These photos were taken a couple days ago by Daniel J. Cox who is working with us to document Short-eared Owl breeding season behavior. He shared these photos as a progress report, of sorts! As you can see (despite the rain), plumage changes are evident. This is especially true for the oldest of the three – who is really taking on the appearance of an adult. We found the youngest two huddling together, the oldest on a branch nearby, and the beautiful Wonky, ever vigilant (see below).

Right now, this family of five remains in close proximity to the nest tree and each other. Soon, they’ll disperse further out, but will remain together throughout the summer. The parents are continuing to feed them but, within a couple of months, these deliveries will stop and the young owls will be hunting on their own.

Great Horned Owls are not migratory. The parents, Wonky and Hootie, can be seen in the area year-round. In fact, it’s not uncommon for us to hear one of their chicks begging for food well into the fall. It’s unlikely these calls generate any results, but there’s no harm in trying, right? 😊 And Great Horned Owls have tight families. As many of you already know, Wonky and Hootie are seen regularly on the Charlo Osprey platform when mating season begins in the winter.

Again, thanks so much for joining us here at the Great Horned Owl nest! And a huge thanks to everyone who contributed to the Community Science Survey! We appreciate your help so much and look forward to sharing our results with you next season.

Sorry. I forgot to BOLD my QUESTION below. I'm a novice at this but have been following several cams for the last 8 or 9 weeks and have found it very stimulating, educational and fun. Thank you.

ORI Liberty • 3 years ago

Hi there! See the featured comment above. If you have follow-up questions, just let me know. :)
Thanks for your interest and glad to hear you've enjoyed your time here. Are you watching the Great Gray Owl cam now?

S. Annunciata • 3 years ago

I am. Thanks for your reply.

S. Annunciata • 3 years ago

Now that the 3 owlets at Roger's Place have fledged do the parents continue to feed them? For how long?

Pepit • 3 years ago

It’s really been super great getting to know and observe this owl family up close, together with this community. These owls have indeed really helped me get through this very difficult time and I’m very grateful. Im feeling the mixed emotions of an empty nester! This is my first time on Explore cams and I’ve really enjoyed the experience - . Thank you ORI Liberty and others for education and great footage! I love 🦉

ORI Liberty • 3 years ago

Thanks, Pepit, that's so nice to hear. It's always a period of adjustment when the owls are suddenly gone for our cam lives. Mixed emotions are completely normal. Hopefully next year will bring the opportunity to watch this pair raise a family again. And don't forget to check the Charlo Osprey perch this winter. Wonky and Hootie are pretty reliable visitors when the sun goes down.
So glad you joined us here! :)

ORI Liberty • 3 years ago

We're having some local connectivity issues on the Great Horned Owl cam and are working to resolve them. Hope to have the stream back up and running soon!
You'll also be happy to hear that in troubleshooting these issues on site, all three fledglings were spotted. They appear to be doing great! :)

NW grl • 3 years ago

So glad to get an update on the owlets. I'm seeing Highlights new to me, with a river below?

ORI Liberty • 3 years ago

Hi NW! The highlights I'm seeing are from Wonky's 2018 cam nest. This one was located not far from this year's nest and that it is pond in the background.

meadow • 3 years ago

Hi, Liberty, and thank you so much, xoxo!! Very happy to hear that all of Wonky and Mr. Hootie's owlets are doing great, missing them SO MUCH!!

It's been so nice having this beautiful family with me every day as I work from home during the pandemic. The sounds of the birds, the gorgeous surroundings and watching this ever so cute family brought a lot of joy and peace to my days. I hope they all thrive! I will miss them a lot. Thank you for bringing such beauty to our homes and I congratulate the camera operator for the great job.
