When I was a maintenance man I saw people in the " family bidness" such as a "disabled" grandmother, the minimum wage worker single mother and multiple children living in the public house, on taxpayer funds, receiving SNAP, WIC, EBT and medicaid/medicare. No doubt that she received EIC taxpayer provided money far encompassing what she made "working," as well. No one wants people to starve, but one of the most astounding things is to actually see how many mechanisms exist to make people absolutely comfortable in poverty without any acceptable effort to improve themselves. The "American Dream"? They are living it on our dime... Welfare benefits provide each recipient with around 60K worth of salary...

Oh, of course. But I knew older people, a number of them, who are just down and out now. Who can get a job at past 50? That was my problem. And they're embarrassed of course. And food stamps can be used even by employed people who are making too little. I learned a lot in my time there, and even though I get angry sometimes, seeing what's bought on food stamps (Popcorn? :P) I feel a little more patience than I used to.

EBT cards are a bad idea. They don't add the element of personal responsibility. They should be getting boxes of food not government credit cards. Make them work to get their goodies like civilized society.

It doesn't matter. There are responsible people who have fallen on bad luck and irresponsible people who are taking a ride. If I wanted to buy ice cream for a treat I used my money and saved the card for the things I really needed. The card only gives you a certain amount and once you run out you run out.

We all know that with a majority bad luck is caused by laziness and lack of personal responsibility. Bad decisions is the baby daddy of bad luck.

I'm 61 and I have a job. Look at your local Wal-Mart most employees are over 50. Elderly workers are in demand. They have a work ethic that you won't find in other generations. The key to finding and keeping a job is to know your welfare is dependent on your employer's success. I took early retirement from HP after 27 years. Even though I was employed by HP, I knew I was actually working for my customers. I never lied or try to sell them something they didn't need. The result was my employer had a ten relationship with a 20 million dollar account. I believe they still have that account? Same thing with my retirement job. I was going to retire again but my employer adjusted my hours so I would stay. Make yourself indispensable and you will always find yourself employed as long as you choose to be.

You can get food stamps with a job if your income is low enough. And Wal-Mart, where I live, mostly hires illegals. I don't shop there partly for that reason. Oh, sure, I got a job in retail. But can you live on that? I never had a raise--even though I was told I was one of the hardest workers in the place. You never saw me sitting around yakking like other people. And I did lose the job--they wanted to be rid of me because I ran such horrible medical bills. I used to joke that I was the best paid employee in the store because of my hospitalizations and medical bills. And I could NEVER get people to sign up for credit cards. So they found a reason to dump me. I worked hard enough but they dumped me anyway.

SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is the new Welfare. My neighbor, who I have gotten to know well, has a full- time job scamming the governmental (us) entitlement programs. She receives SSI, housing assistance, medicare ( which she uses to get doctor approved narcotic prescriptions and sells them on the streets for extra pocket change.... all on the backs of the taxpayers). She is the epicenter of this disaster that has spread out to her four adult children, her ex-husband, her children's significant others, and now she is working with :"mental health professionals" to get her grandchildren diagnosed. You guessed it......to get them on SSI too (yes, four and five year olds qualify). Initially she attempted to be approved based upon physical disability, but failed. I have to give her credit for perseverance. She reapplied with "mental issues" and was approved. Now she advises other parasites to go the mental route. This family "earns" thousands in cash and benefits each month. Ex. her daughter, daughter's unemployed boyfriend, and 4 children get $670.00 a month in food assistance. How many working families of 6 spend $600.00+ on food a month? Oh, forgot, the federal student loan program is a gold mine too. She and some of her cohorts have gotten thousands in student aid and had no intention on getting an education to better themselves.

Agree. I help raise money for a food pantry, and I know that many of the recipients use the pantry for food after using EBTs for "other things," but I do it because their young kids are innocent, and they are the victims.
