This quote from an obscure NM state senator quoted in the Republican mouthpiece newspaper of Colorado certainly is as egregious as the racist remarks of the HEAD OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IN NEW MEXICO'S MOST POPULOUS COUNTY. The other day, I think I heard little Johnny on the middle school playground say something racially offensive, too. Call the Urinal!

A quick linguistic analysis of Ms. Garcia's comments actually indicates that she was prompted by the reporter for these comments: "conceding that “there have always been conflicts between blacks and
browns.” The word "concede" means that Ms. Garcia was agreeing with a statement from somebody at this interview, presumably the reporter prompting her by saying something like "Isn't it true that there have always been conflicts between blacks and browns here in New Mexico?" I have a feeling Ms. Garcia was just trying to be polite to a stranger.

And I presume that Dan Foley has not actually contacted Ms. Garcia for clarification of her remarks. Gasp! Is Dan trusting "Big Media" here to report the Truth?!! What if - shudder - the Rocky Mountain News just made all this stuff up?!!

By the way, Danny boy, spending your first two paragraphs distancing yourself from being a racist is ... how to say this delicately ... "This fledgling columnist doth protest too much, methinks."

Re: Low-Income borrowers blamed in bailout crisis

Wow, Republicans rehashing the same old "welfare queens in Cadillac" kind of lies. Huh. I see nothing in PR Dan's comments but the same old bluster and bullying that he used to such stellar effect on the floor of the Roundhouse (and that Roswell basketball court, for that matter.) Watch out everybody! Facts, get out of the way! Here comes master debater Dan Foley with the courage of his invective!

Now, Dan, a point-by-point examination of all of your misleading statements and groundless positions would waste too much time, but you're claiming Republicans are leading the way regarding race relations in the US? So HOW MANY black Republican senators and House members are there on Capitol Hill? And that "Southern strategy" used by the GOP every election in the south to crank up the bigotry and support of whites below the Mason-Dixon line. Very race sensitive! Oh, another: Bush spread the "McCain's illegitimate black-baby" lie about the current GOP pres nominee in South Carolina in 2000 to win South Carolina. Yes, if Republikkkans are the party I think of when I think of civil rights, it's because they've OPPOSED them year after year in every way possible in America. Opposition to civil rights actually DEFINES the GOP these days everywhere in the US except in Dan Foley's vivid imagination.

But now I'm curious: tell me ONE bill sponsored by Dan Foley in the legislature that had anything to do with improving race relations or advancing civil rights. ONE BILL, please. You were there for a few years, no? What am I saying? You were a GOP leader! There must be a whole list of landmark civil rights legislation you can point to and be proud of, right? Cough 'em up, Danny boy, and let's revel in your proud legislative history.

And a very quick look at the demographics of pretty much every major election would confirm the status of the GOP on race relations. I mean, it's frickin' NEWS when the GOP gets more than 30% minority support ANYWHERE! So tell us all about the compassionate but misunderstood GOP, as regards race relations in the US. We're all ears. But I trust you used more convincing arguments - i.e., facts - during debates when you were a minority yourself up in the Roundhouse.

And let's see, you're claiming Mary Garcia is like Thomas Jefferson? OK. And you're Abraham Lincoln because you spent two paragraphs saying you're no racist. Right ... Rant on, Danny boy! I imagine you have a lot of scores to settle with your old nemesis, Ms. Garcia, so keep it up. Maybe someday you'll get that sweet revenge you're obviously slavering after. (But one hint: find a respectable media source rather than the Rocky Mtn Enquirer).

Now, this forum isn't full of cream-puffs like our state legislators who'll pretend to listen to the garbage you're spewing, and only laugh at you behind your back. This is the real world, Dan, and in the real world we can laugh IN YOUR FACE and say you're an just another tired, washed-up GOP troll longing for attention and revenge so bad you're peddling your lies and venom on a some "obscure" political website in New Mexico. How pathetic! How LOW the mighty have fallen! Proof? You're actually arguing with ME!

(And, say, how DID you get that judge to drop assault charges, anyway? Way to play our damaged judicial system! Congrats! Say, Heather was just asking about a good lawyer. You know, without a niceties like this, the rest of your statements could sound a bit shrill and mean spirited. Thanks for being civil and sticking to your facts.

Now, I asked you for one shred of evidence for your statement about how Republicans lawmakers - especially yourself - have "done what is right" for civil rights here in New Mexico or anywhere else. That was the central thrust of your commentary, as you recall, right? GOP = Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Democrats = Klan, remember? One bill, one memorial, one offhand comment, one tiny shred ... something? I didn't even mention your use of C. de Baca's name in the same sentence with the words "integrity" and "courage"!! I'm not sure being thrown under a bus can be called a courageous act of integrity, but you are certainly entitled to your own ... uh ... set of facts.

Too much time wasted here. I had better end my "wrong Liberal attack" here before more people reading this blog immediately start voting Republican! Thanks for the tip! And thanks for calling me "always so right." And I'm very glad your ancestors helped found the town of Blackdom or whatever you are implying by mentioning that interesting African-American ghost town in New Mexico.

From your remarks so far, I can see your knowledge of and involvement in human rights in New Mexico is deeper and more heartfelt than I could ever have imagined. I apologize for thinking that you could ever be just trying to reap cheap political hay out of Ms. Garcia's remarks. I should have realized that your even-tempered and insightful remarks so far on this subject were just your misty-eyed attempt to open a dialogue on race relations in New Mexico. For that I offer you my sincerest regrets straight from, as you might say, the bottom of my "Liberal, uneducated, ignorant butt."

However, getting back the point of your column (sorry to keep hammering at this!), I just realized that we have been overlooking somebody on the VERY SAME FRONT PAGE of the New Mexico Independent who is expressing the EXACT SAME IDEAS as Ms. Garcia whom you hold in such contempt . Hard to believe, I know. Now, scroll down the page (the "Page Down" key should do it) in the NM Independent and look for the following article:

"Racial tension between Hispanics and blacks is real" By Barbara Armijo 9/26/08 8:28 AM

Ms. Armijo has written a carefully thought out and researched piece that expresses - and elaborates on - AAAARRGGGHHHH! - the EXACT SAME IDEAS as Ms. Garcia. Outrageous, huh? (You know, it may be just my imagination but I think I can actually HEAR you seethe as you read this!)

Now, Dan, I hope you are intellectually honest enough to communicate your profound outrage to your fellow-columnist Barbara Armijo who, as I mentioned, is expressing the EXACT SAME IDEAS as Ms. Garcia. I must warn you, though: this Ms. Armijo uses quotes to support her arguments; and correct spelling; and complete sentences; and multiple sources. But I think if you do your best "writting" and use your REAL name, you should be fine.

Go to it, Dan! This is your moment! But remember, you - like your momma Palin - gotta watch those "crazy, off-the-wall comments." They're fine with "tiny-mind" slobs like me, but they don't play so well with non-ignorant, educated people. Just a thought.

JC

PS: I forgot! I AM glad you think I'm the best thing to happen to the GOP in a long time! You know, I actually think you may be inadvertently telling the truth for once! I think this remark of yours is waaaay off base:

"... New Mexico politics - stick around long enough and you'll end up in some level of authority ... like a leadership position in the statehouse, regardless of your actual credentials or character ..."

Now that's below the belt, PT! I've heard - from Dan Foley himself, actually - that Dan Foley did an excellent job as minority whip up in the Roundhouse. Cheap shots such as attacking Dan Foley's leadership position, credentials and character might seem like an easy job, but let me tell you, it's ... uh ... it's proved to be a lot easier than it sounds. Still, you need to back up your accusations against Dan with some facts. Like more fully discussing his credentials and character. He hasn't, for instance, spent any time in SE Asia, has he? He IS "entertaining" I have noticed.

And, what can I say?, nice job blowing the lid off the state-legislator/Vietnamese "entertainer" story. Funny, I'm SURE I haven't seen anything about that in the Journal and they usually jump on provocative gossip like that. You know, you and Dan - if you could set aside your differences for an afternoon - might really be able to manufacture - oops! Are their real estate values low enough already?

Re: Domenici Awaits House Action on His Final Legacy

Too bad Domenici always has been dead-set against Universal Health Care for the US. His special carve out for mental health consumers would be unnecessary if we Americans had the same universal coverage as every other civilized country in the world.

But the insurance lobby is too powerful to allow Pete to vote for that!

Re: Domenici Awaits House Action on His Final Legacy

Who said "free" healthcare? Somebody has to pay, and most of us already do, big time, and much more than our broken system is worth. The only question is whether a country has to tolerate the grotesquely elevated costs of that healthcare when insurance companies demand their "cut." They add nothing to the quality of our health system and only crank up costs overall with their ridiculous CEO pay packages, shareholder dividends, and collusion with corrupt doctors and hospitals.

You're saying over forty million Americans have "chosen" NOT to have any healthcare at all? And, strange to say, they all seem to be in the lower income group. America STILL manages to spend more per capita than anywhere else in the world. Why? We have let the insurances companies become the last vestige of the nineteenth century robber barons.

TJ, reliable access to health care is a human right, not socialism. Health care should be like any other necessity to America's citizens like clean water, clean air, police and fire protection, access to public transportation.

As may probably know, Domenici became a convert to his very modest mental health proposal ONLY after his own daughter became a mental health consumer and he got to experience that system up close and personal. It's nice to recognize Pete's one area of concern to America's mental health community, but few articles connect all the dots in showing how he got so "radicalized."

Universal health care would be the single biggest economic boost to the American economy in modern time. Research this important topic, TJ, instead of repeating the same tired old talking points of the defenders of the insurance corporations.

Re: It’s unpatriotic to question the U.S. Really? Only a CENTURY? Why does Heather hate American behavior prior to 1908? What about ending slavery? What about stealing New Mexico from Mexico?
