There are too many stereotypes floating out there about "age" and individual's comfort level with technology. Early adopters and technology users come in ALL ages, just as luddites do. I have many students (I teach in a small private college in New England) who select business and marketing fields because they don't "get" technology, and while they use smart phones, apps, and tools like Facebook to stay connected, they are struggling with the pace of change and are often resistant to new tools that come out. I have older friends who are all over different technologies. It's time to stop basing tech use and comfort level on age. This individual is influencing a huge group of people to avoid tools that may make their lives easier out of an inaccurate assumption that it is too "hard" for them to grasp at their age. Just silly. We are never too old to learn and try new things, and being younger doesn't mean we know it all either.

Re: Why Aren't College Students Using LinkedIn To Find Jobs?

Brian this is a great article -- a very timely as students get ready to graduate. As a college professor who teaches students about the use of digital marketing and social media marketing tools in the marketing profession, LinkedIn is a big part of what I emphasize with my students. Here's an example of a project seniors in my Marketing Capstone must complete: http://ejyoung.com/teaching... LinkedIn is a big part of that assignment. Once students get over the initial uncertainty and move out of their "friend circles" to more "professional circles" it makes all the difference.

It would be nice to include professionals in this post -- acting as coaches and mentors who can guide students as they make the transition from student to professional can make a huge difference as well.

Re: In Classroom Experiment, All Discussion Happened via Twitter

I've been using Twitter in the classroom since Twitter first came online in 2006. I teach social media marketing and digital marketing classes. What this professor did was essentially a "Tweetchat" -- something that I've required my students to do for years. In Tweetchats there is a moderator or moderators that pose questions that others from around the world then respond to utilizing a specific hashtag. It's a great way to connect students to professionals in a specific field. Some great ones include #blogchat, #u30pro, and #higheredchat.

What a great exercise for a class to explore the many different ways to communicate and share information. When my students participate in their first tweetchat it is very overwhelming but then they begin to connect with professionals, gain confidence in their own knowledge and they grow their understanding of how to process information (think Digital Literacy!).

Kudos to Prof. Groening! Great work. Keep on pushing and teaching our students how to navigate the many different ways to communicate.

Re: Advice to new college students and their parents: Have fun, learn new things, give and get stickers

So glad things are going well for your daughter. It also highlighted that we have local advertisers who don't seem to mind that they are affiliated with that show. It is my right as an American to call this out and to speak up when I am offended. Seems to me that is what you would want your children to learn about -- they can then use their own free will and educated minds to come to their own conclusions. My blog posts do not reflect the point of view of Champlain College, they are my own opinions as a career-oriented, professional woman who teaches Marketing.

Re: The social media measurement smackdown

Thank you for this post. As a college professor who is teaching young marketers and who is in the process of developing a course entitled "Web Metric and Analytics" to specifically address ROI, measurement and metrics I can tell you that the data and measurement is vital.

Let us not live in the world of "feel good metrics" or "it looks good" or the traditional advertising heyday when the win was not in how much action was taken but that the ad looked great in the magazine. Training people to think about the objectives they will measure using both quantitative and qualitative data gets them thinking intentionally about how to leverage each channel and each tool for maximum effectiveness. Without that data, then the job of the social media manager will be relegated to the lowest rungs of the ladder or end up on the cutting room floor.

Distinguishing between entrepreneurs and businesses is also an important aspect of your post. And I agree that it is different.

Keep twitching and know that there are those of us on the front lines who are teaching who know just how important this all is.

Elaine

Re: http://www.rosiethemarketer.tumblr.com/post/17635462547

Except for the fact that it happens far too much here...in this country...where in the board room when the women speak, we are not heard. In the office where we are too pushy or should "tone it down" or should stop being so blunt. Or in the classroom when men speak up and women do not have the confidence in their own point of view to speak up and shine. In advertising where a sexy woman dripping foam from her latte is really a man's dream of a car. Do not fool yourself...what we have here is covert, under the covers, sneaky -- it makes you question if you are just being "too sensitive" or maybe they are right, you are a "bitch". At least there it is out in the open. I ask you...which is worse?

Re: Is Your Social Media Influence Important in Finding that Dream Job?

Great post Jeff. Thanks for recirculating it -- the timing is perfect for college seniors as they begin to realize that in just a few short months they'll be in the job hunt in earnest.

It mirrors an assignment I do in my senior marketing class where the students have to brand themselves online -- they read Me 2.0 by Dan Schwabel and I recommend CrushIt! by Gary Vanyerchuck. Their goal is to pick something they are passionate about, use a grouping of social tools (they are required to use LinkedIn, Twitter and Google+) and consider their goals and objectives utilizing analytics and Klout. Many are exploring different blogging platforms, considering how to leverage YouTube and a group is playing with Pinterest as well. I've sent this post around to them via our class hashtag: #ccc410mkt and hope they will gain a great deal from it.Elaine YoungMarketing ProfessorChamplain College

Re: Epic Fail: Millennials Get Slammed in Poll on Workplace Attitudes

I wonder if that same survey has been given to college professors about their students?

Re: Social Media's Slow Slog Into the Ivory Towers of Academia - Josh Sternberg - Technology - The Atlantic

Excellent article. I've been teaching Internet Marketing for 10+ years at Champlain College along with various marketing courses. I began integrating tools such as RSS Feed Readers, Blogs and Twitter as soon as they came out and am now using Google+ in my classes -- all with the focus on teaching marketing students how professionals in the field use these tools.

Your article is SPOT ON about the challenges my students are facing in their internships and as they graduate. An assumption on the part of businesses that because of their age they will fully understand how to utilize these tools. Not because they have learned them, but just because they are so-called "digital natives".

As I introduce a new group of first year marketing majors to social media tools it is the nuance of communication that they must learn. There are no hard and fast rules and we are making up so much of this as we go within the professional world that the burden to teach students how to prepare for these communication technologies is not an easy one.

Thank you for a great article that highlights those of us in Academia who are helping our students wrap their heads around the pace of change, how these various tools impact communication and how to use them most effectively. It is articles such as these that will hopefully move my colleagues to recognize that teaching these tools has merit.

Dr. Elaine Young
Assistant Dean, Division of Business
Professor, Marketing
Champlain College
Burlington, VT
@ejyoung67

Re: Weekend Reading: Creative Syllabuses Wanted Edition

Thanks for sharing this Jason! Just one quick note -- the syllabus is for a senior level internship.
