Thanks for posting this, Alina! Of course I'll listen to any VU cover, and I think Big Star does a nice job with this one. Stylistically, I guess it's not much of a departure from the original. I think their rendition has the same vulnerable feel to it, which I really like. When did they cover this, do you know, and why haven't I previously heard of Big Star's music?

On a somewhat related note, I really need to get my hands on Beck's cover of "The VU and Nico"... I don't think his cover of this song is my favorite, but I do really like his cover of "Sunday Morning." http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Also, have you seen the BBC versions of many of the films? It's so useful to watch them while you read along. They're posted somewhere on the UC Berkeley library website, I can try to find the link if your professor hasn't given it to you already.

Okay, definitely on my list of to-read authors. How would you describe his writing style?

And for that matter, which of his books would you recommend starting with?

Right now I'm reading "The World According to Garp," even though I seriously detested John Irving's style in a collection of his short stories, "Trying to Save Piggy Sneed." To me it came off as a strange mixture of being casual and affectedly sophisticated, but I've found myself laughing out loud at his novel.

Maybe you will stay! A few years ago, one of my teachers gave the statistic that ~ 70% of college graduates stay w/i the area of their college b/c that's where they've formed all their connections. But then I guess 'going away' to grad school is a possibility too. Maybe that number was just referring to those who found employment immediately after college.

Oh man, these people sound like real characters. Maybe you can turn this into a piece of writing, just to vent and to also document these reality TV-types.

And totally, you're welcome to come visit whenever! Or maybe you can save up for some permanent escape like I did, haha. (Damn, do I really wish I had my own savings at the time.)

Right now I'm thinking of applying to Bard College (in Annandale-on-Hudson) and Reed College (in Oregon) right now. Bard accepts spring transfers, Reed unfortunately doesn't. Still thinking, researching...

Day-um girl, we need an intervention. Or at least a job application so that you can get some sort of a discount there. My few Target trips since I've been here never failed to be less than $30, most of it just-plain-crap. The Target in Brooklyn is kinda ghetto, it's in this mall... ew.

Oh damn, sorry to hear that work isn't going well. :( Condescending older people are the WORST. I remember when my friends and I were volunteering to set up for this silent auction at the Hilton in Huntington Beach (they were expecting a lot of rich people, obviously), and the people in charge of us thought they had to break-down how to count in chronological order. "See? So if this basket says FOUR, you find the clipboard that says FOUR and put it UNDER it. The next one is FIVE, and SIX, and so on..."

The threat of getting fired is always such an unpleasant one, so I'm really sorry to hear that that has been in the air. But I'm glad that you're being optimistic about it and thinking of other options. Stay strong!

I think you'd be surprised (at least I was haha), tutoring for 6 hrs a week is actually pretty manageable! (Around an hr a day, and then a seminar.) But yeah, totally understandable.

Yeah, still @ AA right now. I think having a job would be nice in school, but I'd probably have to see how the school was at first. I guess the good thing about Berkeley was that they were so big that they actually had campus jobs that paid well. Are you going to be working? You should seriously consider tutoring at the SLC.

Seriously considering applying to Bard and Reed right now, but unfortunately I'll have to do one before the other b/c Reed doesn't accept spring transfers. But all of this is still in the conception phase, and my confidence and general sense of knowing what the fuck I am doing is really variable.
