No, you misunderstood me. By 99 percent, I was referring to class, not a voting bloc. In other words, London Breed is supported by Ron Conway, a white San Francisco billionaire, and she will always follow the wishes of the rich white billioniares who support her over her constituents or the 99 percent.

@billtaplan London Breed routinely votes with rich white developers over the interests of the 99 %. I am in the 99% AND a resident of D5, Breed's district, so yeah, I am disgruntled that my supervisor ignores the wishes of her constituents to favor wealthy people who don't even live in her district.

Fortunately, we have the option of using software that is covered by copy left, rather than copy right. I have been using Linux computers since 2000, and I have been very happy with the experience. I am party of a community of users that shares the software. Google "Free Software, Free Society", a book by Richard Stallman, and try downloading Ubuntu Linux. In addition to what Eric Newport said below, another point that Larry Lessig made in the original version of Republic Lost is that the stakes are too hight to cavalierly assume that we can never correct congressional corruption. On page 306, Lessig poignantly addresses the importance of courage against long odds in this fight: "And for the first time in my life, in the middle of a public lecture, I was so choked by emotion that I thought I had to stop. For the picture that came into my head as I struggled for a response to this fair yet devastating question was the image of my (then) six-year-old boy, and the thought, the horror, of a doctor’s telling me that he had terminal cancer and that 'there was nothing to be done.' I painted that picture to that Dartmouth audience. And I then asked this: 'Would you give up? Would you do nothing?' "

Lessig then goes on to say that while there is a difference between love of family and love of nation, they can both be compelling emotions. And truly, he is correct. People have fought and died for their nation, sometimes seemingly against long odds. If others are willing to die for their nation, surely we can steel our spines for the hardship that will be entailed in getting proper election reform in place.

Wow, you rock. Really nice work. Technically impressive. Would you like to work on the Digital Tipping Point movie? It's a documentary about how FOSS is changing global culture by teaching the pragmatic power of sharing. Speaking of sharing, we have lots of hours of interviews with FOSS leaders and prominent politicians, thinkers, and businesspeople talking about how FOSS is changing global culture. We are going to hang all of that footage on the skeleton of one experiment in moving one impoverished public middle school in San Francisco to FOSS. Can we make a mini digital tipping point in one school?
