On Wednesday they made all the swimmers get out of the water at around 4pm but the surfers got to stay. The lifeguards seemed confused about why they made us get out. It was really rough out there though.

I totally loved this movie when I was a teenager! I don't think I knew anyone else who had seen it at the time. When I rewatched it a few years ago I realized I connected with it because Liv Tyler was so realistically teenage, but also because the weirdo artist adults in her life looked like the adults in my life.

Alastair Sim version FTW. There are so many perfect moments and performances - the housekeeper on Christmas morning, everyone at the nephew's house (maybe especially the maid who takes Ebenezer's coat), the junk man scene, the old woman Alice is tending to at the poorhouse, Fan's death scene. It's so rich.

Thank you for this! Leia is such a deep root for me. She's badass and tough and sarcastic and you're right, she never cries even when her whole family and home planet are destroyed and she is tortured by Vader and told she will be executed. She barely loses her composure. Meanwhile Luke loudly mopes about the death of Obi-Wan (a guy he just met), never once asks how Leia is doing post-murder of her whole world, and Leia actually pulls it together to comfort the whiny little thing. And you know that if Vader had told Leia he was her father, she wouldn't have fallen apart like Luke did.

Straight from the Soul is the best breakup album I've ever heard in terms of its ability to capture every stage of emotion. Breakaway and Anyone Who Knows What Love Is have similar sentiments to The Hurts All Gone.

The influx of investment firms, often from outside NYC or even the US, buying up Brooklyn housing needs to be part of the conversation as well. These firms make all cash offers (often higher than asking price) and target gentrifying areas. I know people who are actually from NYC, wanted to buy here, and were approved for mortgages but could not find a house to buy because they kept getting outbid with these cash offers. In Bed-Stuy the result has been former single or two family homes either sitting vacant as the investor waits for their investment to appreciate or cut up into multiple tiny apartments (some of which are being used as AirBnBs, which takes them out of the housing market altogether).

I mean "violent" as a legal classification not the real world meaning. A Rob 2 is a "violent felony offense" under NYS law whereas a Rob 3 is a "non violent felony offense."

Forcible taking makes it a robbery and any physical injury, no matter how slight, bumps it from a nonviolent Rob 3 to a violent Rob 2. I wish it were less common for teenagers to be charged with Rob 2 for stuff like taking a bookbag but it goes on happening all the time.
