I was referring to the University of Washington in this case, the entity that would appoint them. As opposed to the public in the hospital district. It's not an issue of "who we are supposed to be afraid of." It's a question about what interests are represented.

You raise an excellent point. No, we did not know Ms. Naimo. Our information was based on documents we received from the courts. But as this does not contribute to the focus of the article, I am removing that reference. Sometimes we get additional information that is not essential to a story, and this was one of those instances.
But when such information is relevant to the article, we do publish it, as a matter of full disclosure to our readers.

Ironically, that is what I was going out there to do a story about - the Blue Star Memorial Marker program, and the local garden club's involvement in it. Unfortunately, there was more to it than I had expected, with the vandalism. I encourage people to visit Cascade View Park to see this marker when they get the chance, and think a kind thought about the service people this program is here to remind us about.

Claudia Kauffman was one of several candidates at this forum, and our coverage did not focus primarily on her. The lunch you are referring to was lunch at the Kent Senior Center, which my newspaper attends every week to connect with residents and support the meal program. Kauffman contacted us, and asked if she could attend the lunch to support the program as well -- and her opponent is welcome to contact us to do the same.
By the same token, you can attend lunch with us as well, although it would mean you'd have to give up the anonymity you have here. But my offer to you stands, kentdadof2. Heck, I'll buy your lunch!

Thank you Jamie, for setting the record straight on this topic. Cottage housing is another, and newer, option in terms of residential developments, and it speaks well of Kent to encourage a demonstration project. The more options, the better, for residents here. And thanks for writing in.

Thanks so much for writing in! While I haven't personally encountered the staffers who are going door-to-door regarding pet licenses, what I've been told is that they are NOT there to do checks on whether people's pets are licensed or not. Their job is just to offer residents the paperwork on their doorstep, so that If they want to license their pet at that time, they can. But I'd love to hear from anyone who says they have had a different experience than that.
And yes, I remember when I was a kid, and our neighborhood dogs were members of the kid pack! In many ways, those were simpler times.

I don't have the staff to evaluate international-level studies. But the bigger publications do - such as The Economist - and that is a reasonable vetting process. The greater wrong, I think, is not writing about such a study at all -- it has been part of a larger dialogue in the media already. That is why I've also included the link to it in my column - so that others may take the time to read it and decide for themselves what they wish to believe.

Wow.
I don't work there. That is part of why I didn't know what she kept asking me for. It wasn't about common sense; I just didn't know what the thing looked like and it was clear nobody had the time to show me.
Prior to going into journalism, I worked in customer service in a number of retail outlets. And when it was clear to me that a customer did not understand what I was telling them, I made a point of asking how I could help them. That is what basic customer service is.
I am certain this clerk does not have the happiest of jobs at times, but I remember distinctly the feeling of satisfaction I received when I did connect with a customer and was able to help them. It wasn't about money at that point.
Please reread what I wrote. I wasn't yelling at her, or making a scene. I simply was being asked the same question, multiple times, when it was clear I had neither the answer, nor the equipment she was requesting.
If you are in customer service, however, you do have my respect. It is a thankless business, for the most part. But it's been my experience that you can have some truly meaningful moments when you connect with and really help a customer. Even a clueless one like myself.

Thank you for your contribution to this story. I think it opens up a wonderful opportunity for dialogue with readers. Many parents do opt to have their children forgo vaccinations, for the concerns you describe, and I respect that.
Personally, I had my daughter vaccinated. Part of my rationale for this was that I wanted her to be part of the headwall of immunity against which some truly terrible diseases would otherwise have the opportunity to spread in school communities.I also weighed the consequences of side effects with the reality of the diseases these medicines fight. Illnesses like diptheria, rubella and the measles used to kill children. Now it is a rare thing to hear. I think that is due, in large degree, to the sheer numbers of children who are now vaccinated for them, thereby keeping the spread of disease to a dull roar. In essence, you might wonder if this group of kids is adding a level of protection for the children who are not vaccinated for them. What are your thoughts on this?
