While the Makem and Spain Brothers are great, the venue is pretty cool too. The Rochester Opera House was an Editor's Pick this summer in the 2008 Best Of NH. The beautiful opera house, which recently celebrated it's 100th anniversary, is the only remaining opera house of the era with a functional moving floor. In 1997 the venue was fully restored – complete with the original mural designs. This building is a unique part of New Hampshire history and is well worth a visit.

Thanks for your wonderful comment. The author, Chelsey Philpot, was a very talented New Hampshire Magazine intern – she's still talented, just unfortunately no longer our intern. She wrote this and a few other great pieces – including a story on the infamous H.H. Holmes and his New Hampshire connections called "Peering Into the Darkness" (find this creepy story in our People section), a story on legendary poet Robert Frost titled "The Homes of Poems" (on the Arts page) and a Last Laugh "The New Hampshire Beach Diet" (found on our Humor and Opinion page).

We miss her terribly and hope she continues to do well in all her endeavors.

Be a part of this year's Theatre Awards at the Palace Theatre in Manchester. February 6 marks the 7th annual awards show that celebrates Granite State theatre. Tickets range from $29.50 to $50 and are available at www.palacetheatre.org. The show starts at 7 p.m.

The calendar was just updated to include information about Yellow Taxi's 2009 season-opening play (Feb. 12), a great photo of the Mayhem Poets (to perform at the at the Lebanon Opera House on Jan. 30), the new play by New Hampshire Magazine "It Listers" the Community Players of Concord (Feb. 12), a great benefit put on by the Queen City Rotary Club (Jan. 31) and more.

I came across an interesting post on the Better Business Bureau's site today. It lays out some good tips for buying wedding insurance if the current economic status is weighing on your mind. We're lucky to have so many solid and exceptional vendors in N.H., but for a relatively small fee (the BBB says $125-$400) you can buy some pretty serious peace of mind. A friend of mine in Mass. was burned by a videographer going bankrupt a few weeks before her destination wedding – not a good situation to be in. If this sounds like something you want to look in to, make sure you do your research to avoid scams – the BBB is a great place to start.
