This could be a good way to design and develop a 'shared housing' program for Poulsbo; first matching accredited students with those that might wish to rent out a portion of an underutilized house for supplemental income. A second phase, if successful, would match the same home owner(s) perhaps with those individuals or families in the community looking for affordable rental - - again, supplemental income, for example, for a widow or widower while strengthening 'social networks' for those otherwise isolated, and creating more affordable housing than traditional rental houses or apartments for those not able to afford such here.

I have penned a guest editoriall/letter to the editor on both the story here itself, and what is pending just behind it, which will loom large shortly I am afraid. That is, the future of our beloved Parks&Rec programs here in Poulsbo, that serve the entire north-end of Kitsap County.
The City has avoided any direct layoffs or furloughs, unlike our surrounding neighbor local governments. Yet we feel the impact of the recession, and must manage carefully the money we do spend that comes from our local residents.
To those who would argue the City Hall project negates the proportional share on ANY other need or program, dwarfing it in monetarial size, I say be carfeul this thinking, for it is indeed a slippery slope once commenced. The City Hall project IS experiencing efforts to down-size it within the Council, but certainly not to needlessly embarrass nor jeopordize what has alreay been expended. The City Hall project spans at least three mayors and some twenty years, and is a bit like trying to correct course on a large aircraft carrier - - done carefully and with much planning ahead, and changes come slowly once direction is set.
In the meantime a host of other City functions must go on, and accountability knows no 'size'. With all of that said, please keep an eye out for my Herald submittal in Friday upcomings edition, and know that SoundWorks WILL NOT CLOSE, okay?!?

As sad and possibly sordid as this all is, all it does in the end is point out once again (as if we didn't know it already) that whether be one a leader or ordinary citizen, in Poulsbo or Suquamish, we are all quite human.

I want to simply say "I knew Mike Bookey", and there is no substitute! Having helped him and his wife Robin move to their little spectacular home on the end of the spit at Driftwood Keys, it was an 'early retirement' dream come true. But there was no retirement for Mike, who first became involved in Kitsap with his national role in fiber-optic broadband, and assisting our then 'Regional Telecommunications Committee' here with his expertise.
Falling in love with Kitsap thru that, he continued his 'non-retirement' by becoming Port of Kingston GM, and his leadership role in helping Kitsap with its transportation dilemmas, like ferrys, was not unlike his work in broadband before - - helping people improve their lives. A one-time U-Dub Huskie football player, he never let my endless " Go Bears!" bother him. He has made his 'end-zone', and will be sorely missed.
