I worked at Taller Puertorriqueño for 1 1/2 years and to be honest it was the best of times. I learned so much about that area and how it works. Unfortunately yes it's not to appealing to people but again that's reality. It goes both ways as well, we have the people who don't want to come to El Centro de Oro just because they are scared but then you have the Latinos in El Centro that don't want to leave just because they think that's all there is to do in Philadelphia.

Taller (just like everyone else) has the opportunity of a lifetime to move to a brand new location, however it's an $8 million project. What we need to do is get involved in community groups to help them. The best thing universities can do is start collaborating with the local schools.

Anyways, I am proud of what Philly Latinos are doing in & out of El Centro do Oro.

Re: PhillyNow: Did Santa Deserve It? - philadelphia weekly online

To shame on those reporters still writing about the "snowball" incident. You're completely right too! The weren't BOOing Santa, they were booing a bad game and a BAD Santa!

Re: Editor's Note - philadelphia weekly online

Ok so parents want to get more involved huh. Well one we can learn to read/write/speak English. No no I'm not one of those racist people but I am in fact Colombian! For the 24 years of my life I have helped my parents translate documents, make phone calls, act like my father, etc.

So why are parents afraid?? Use your children for crying out loud. Yes my brother and I joke around a lot about mom/dad but hey they are our parents. As much as I want to tell my dad LEARN BETTER ENGLISH, I can't. But hey that's life.

Re: Vote, Schmote - philadelphia weekly online

Great videos to along with the story! People are always asking, "Where is the good news out there!?" Well here it is.

His story hopefully can inspire everyone out there whether HIV positive or not. This man struggled but at the same time knew he was doing wrong so he changed it. As long as you know what you want in life, no one can stop you; that's what I always believed in. It may take time and patience and he got it.

Re: The Angry Grammarian - philadelphia weekly online

i love our multimedia library!

Re: 9021-Uh-Oh - philadelphia weekly online

I'm not so sure bout this 90210 2.0 version as well. I don't even know why I watched it haha. Maybe it was because back in 1990 i watched the old show and Melrose Place <--Talk about drama.

But this new version tries to add "today" things like blogs, sidekicks and god knows what else. However, everytime they bring up Brenda and Kelly, it feels like I'm watching the old show. Maybe that's it..maybe the new actors are horrible?

Either way, this won't last long haha.

Re: We're in Yer Twitter, Making Tweets - philadelphia weekly online

welcome to the wonderful world of TWITTER!

Re: Ask a Mexican - philadelphia weekly online

Wow to the first inquiry. At my employer right now, I'm allowed to speak it, in fact it helps! In 2002 when I was a freshman in college, my roommate was amazed that I spoke another language, today it's almost the same thing. But it doesn't make any sense that 95% of the workers are Latino and are not allowed to speak any of their native language....koo koo

Re: Lost in America - philadelphia weekly online

My father & mother came to this country in the late 1970s for a better life. It was my mother who wanted to come here because her whole family decided to live in the U.S. Of course already married, my father could not stay in Colombia; so he came to the U.S. one year after my brother was born. He may have left what could've been a better (paying) life. He studied law in Colombia and graduated with a degree. Who knows what he could've accomplished there.

Sometime I feel bad because my brother and I make more money than he does; note my mother works 3rd shift retail and she has epilepsy. My father used to work in carpentery, but know works for Red Roof Inn cleaning. However, if it wasn't for my parents pushing us to exceed in life, we wouldn't be where we are today, and that I am thankful for.

It has been difficult, and finding a job is not easy, but I am thankful for my parents, my education, my friends and everyone whom I came across with in my 24 years of life.
