The title of this photo, "It soothes the savage breast," is based on the oft misquoted line from William Congreve's play "The Mourning Bride." The entire quote is "Music has charms to soothe the savage breast, To soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak." It is often misquoted as "Music soothes the savage beast." The title of this event was "Music Saves," and my headline was meant to elaborate on that theme.

This story has been altered from the version that appeared in American City
& County's February print edition to clarify that only Cranston, R.I., had
to cut services to continue clearing its streets of snow.
