the latter); in that case I could be convinced to feel otherwise (and should I have the fortune/misfortune to meet him in person, I might feel otherwise as well, who knows). But as it is, I'm offended by the narrow-mindedness of his assumptions. (Also, he self-identified as a bit of chemical scum so if you are feeling offended on his part, please consider this.)

*rant*

He seems much like Dawkins in the confidence that science is the end all be all, that knowing in this manner is the end all be all of knowledge, that the universe is a bunch of rocks flying around in perfect order, following perfectly the laws of physics, marred only by some random bit of chemical scum with the miraculous ability to think abstractly... Instead of being open to the possibility that the our brains are inextricably a part of the cosmos and quite possibly the chicken-before-the-egg reason that it exists as it does.

He offends me in this instance because when I read between the lines, I see the continued promulgation of the attitude which keeps me from my own researches into the nature of the universe: science as dogma, science as religion; high priests allowing only the faithful to enter deeper into the temple of knowledge, excommunicating the heretical.

He does not seem to be capable of seeing what he does not know. And as a scientist, this is a singularly important ability.

*rant completed*

Re: http://blog.millsbaker.net/post/15801320552

the <3 is for your words, not d.d.'s. imo he's a bit of chemical scum, no matter how brilliant.

Re: http://blog.millsbaker.net/post/14418282494

what does metzinger mean by single world? if he's speaking of a single planet in a singular universe, i'm not so sure he's correct. modern physics points to the multiverse; perhaps we could not have consciousness without it.

if he's speaking more figuratively, i may still have to disagree. which of us lives in such a singular world? not i. there is the world that i think exists, there is the world i experience with my body, there is the world that i interpret, and more... it's all these worlds in combination which best describes the world in which we conscious beings inhabit.

makes a.i. seem even more unattainable, but i am hopeful. it's going to happen around the same time we grok traveling light years without the need of attaining ridiculous velocities, i.e. when we understand the nature of the universe and our place in it (how we fit, how consciousness fits into a multiverse of flying rocks).

as to interiority (seemingly defined by you here as inaccessibility), i believe it does exist -- as the totality of all interactions and all data that is the web. i wonder if some embryonic form of 'artificial' consciousness might exist already, waiting for the 'right' algorithm or structure to let it divide and specialize and grow...

Re: Meta is Murder. One would think that an industry with so much data about us (as consumers) could do a better job of getting it right. (Actually this is part of the problem. Looking at data from only one perspective skews any reliable information contained in same. It's as if over the decades we've forgotten what it was we were doing, settled into some kind of automated state of cultural/consumptive reproduction, going through the motions without ever understanding why we do what we do or what any of it means.)

Also, I disagree wholeheartedly with your dinner companion's assessment of the future. The timeline is a bit shorter than that -- I give it 5 to 10 years max. With no mind interface necessary. (The mind interface itself is more gloss, more dross. I don't think the solution involves reducing the time between desire for a thing and knowing where to find it.)

As new understandings of what it means to consume percolate through society, so too will advertising change (or yes, it will die).

Re: Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Finder

What fun!
