Maybe its "street smarts" or "street shocked" but i've been around these parts long enough to realize if you leave a bike unattended, unlocked even in the most innocent of places - it will be jacked. If you leave a bag in your car unattended with the windows rolled up, you have a pretty good chance of coming back to a broken window, missing bag and maybe even an open trunk or worse, a missing car. This all happened long before the current sad state of affairs we're experiencing today. Why if we lived in a perfect world, with perfect policies, I would love to sit in a public east bay cafe, sip a delicious, instagrammable mocha with perfect heart-shaped latte art reading about the next Great Depression / RV Apocalypse on my shiny new Macbook Pro with the M2 + 16GB ram, but call me shell shocked - it won't happen anytime soon.

Yeah teenagers stealing computers sucks big time, but why would anyone want to sit in an outdoor cafe (or indoor cafe for that matter) with a $2000 computer on the table? showing off? can't find a better place to work with it? Just having that kind of hardware wide open is basically asking for trouble.

I went to that Home Depot several weeks ago and saw several zombies walking the aisles and the security guard looked rugged, somewhere between battle hardened and tired of his job. I'm sure they must have a pretty hard time with theft prevention.

Sad.. nothing like a cup of genmaicha with the view of garbage-strewn RVs post-apocalyptic mad max way beyond the thunderdome. You really have to feel for these businesses.

LOL in Oakland (around 35th and market) i've seen an extension cord connecting a zombie RV to a tent on the other side of the road. The unshielded extension cord was basically laid out on the street being constantly run over by oncoming traffic. As my gamer son would sometimes say, "the homeless are leveling up".

Last weekend while parked and waiting for my wife who was shopping at Berkeley Bowl West, I saw in just a span of 30 minutes:

+ A homeless guy walking by, wielding a golf club, swearing various epithets and threatening passing pedestrians and bicyclists.
+ A homeless guy walking by, with a broomstick made into a spear slung over his shoulder.
+ Several other cracked out zombie-looking types walking around with seemingly no destination in mind.

It's bad enough that many of these tents are basically eye sores covered in trash, but the threats and violence that come with them are making the city an extremely uncomfortable place to live, shop, and visit. What kind of crimes or incidents (violence/attacks/deaths?) will it take for things to change?

Oddly I've had rocks thrown at my car from the encampment near i-80. So now I try my best to stay in the third lane when passing by these entitled encampments. I'm so really glad to see these camps are finally being dispursed, and hopefully they cover the areas with large rocks (to make tent creation impossible) and fence them off.

What about the lethal weapon that you can't see? like COVID-19? Great idea to restrain/tackle some crazed maniac even with a wobbly plastic face-shield and N-95 mask on. Personally, I have noticed a few of these transients or so-called "mentally ill" using this pandemic-induced fear to their advantage.

Although I love (ahem... adore) Halloween i'm not passing candy out this year. I just can't deal with a litigious parent suing me if somehow covid was contact traced to my house. I'm playing the safe route.

Sorry guys, its always sad to see a old school, nostalgic restaurant go out of business - but the food did suck and its really not a loss to the area in terms of a quality eating establishment.
