Not being a youth of today (but rather of one the last century) I will avoid any lingo, but will say this was an exceptional piece in light of the proliferation of massive transmission projects enabled by the Bush/Cheney Energy Act of 2005.

Be aware that Sen. Harry Reid has proposed legislation that would give the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission -- which does not answer to the President nor Congress -- vast, sweeping powers to site transmission lines wherever it sees fit. With that comes the power of eminent domain.

NPR's series on the grid was exceptional journalism and excellent public service. The one thing it did, however, overlook was the fact that the last blackout to hit the Northeast was not cause by an antiquated grid. An untrimmed tree branch fell on a line and human error caused the loss of power to 55 million Americans.

A "smart grid" will help, but smart people have to run it ... and chainsaws to trim the trees!
