Only 2 or 3 of the trash cans are ever filled and residents just dump their trash and some recyclables on the ground right outside the door, a few feet from the trash cans. It piles up pretty quickly and spreads out over the steps to the outside and even sometimes inside the building. At times there has been broken glass and open garbage (pizza crusts, chicken bones, etc.) with flies buzzing around. I've notified our building manager about it multiple times, emphasizing the hazard it causes and asking them to notify tenants to dispose of trash in the receptacles provided, or put up signs in the building, but they've basically refused to do anything about it. I get the feeling that most of my neighbors are pretty apathetic and would not be open to a tenant meeting, but if anyone has any tips, I'd love to hear them.

Re: 11226 Is the Third Noisiest Zip Code in Brooklyn

Nosiest or noisiest? ;) Not surprising; I contributed to two of those 1352 noise complaints.

Re: What Do You Want to See at 1023 Church Avenue?

Definitely. I'm moving back to the Slope (hopefully) or outskirts (likely) and, though renting, have seen a lot of reviews from buyers on Yelp as well. I've gotten screwed in the past so before checking any realtor out I always check reviews first. A few that I've met with are TB Shaw, Garfield Realty and Brooklyn Properties and they've been pretty good so far. Avoid Corcoran and Aguayo/Huebner.

Re: TechCrunch Giveaway: An Apple iPad #TechCrunch

Because the iPhone battery only lasts so long when you need to live-tweet during the NFL playoffs.

Re: Fucked in Park Slope - A Brooklyn Blog - Home - Snowpocalypse 2010: ONE. People should be able to dress however they want at Halloween, cross-dressing or not.

2) Sounded like it was other moms, not kids who were appalled, though I wonder if the kid has been teased before since the mom indicated he was suddenly worried before going. He probably had a sense that it was different from how other kids dressed for Halloween. And that's sad - but again, those attitudes in 5 year olds are usually instilled by parents.

3) How about thinking of this as a mom promoting tolerance and letting her son simply be who he wants to be? She was aware he might get made fun of but how better to combat ignorance and intolerance than not sitting at home afraid of the reactions? The more people keep saying they wouldn't let kids be who they are out of fear of reaction, the more they perpetuate fear and ignorance. This mom is brave, and her son is a better person for it.

Re: Why I Hope the Padres Win It All

i can't help but agree with your reasoning, as much as i'd prefer almost anyone but the padres (or the reds, or the phillies) to win.

then again: "And my wife loves Chicago, for the shopping." dude, have you been hanging out with rob dibble? not sure I want gonzales now after all.

Re: The greatness of baseball (Updated)

Mr Dibble:
As one of the bloggers who posted about the incident, I want to thank you for writing this response and acknowledging the backlash against what you said. Your respect for your mother, your wife, and your daughter, and their love of baseball, are admirable. I don't believe that you are sexist or that you hate women. I further appreciate that you said you "humbly and sincerely apologize" on air today, and I truly believe that you mean it.
But I have to ask: if your comments about the women behind the plate were "misconstrued" then what did you really mean? Maybe you were trying to be funny, but there is nothing funny about comments that stereotype women, whether intentionally made or not. I did not take offense at your criticism of people who come to the stadium and talk the whole time and don't pay attention to the game. I have been attending sporting events since I was a child and understand the frustration. However, everyone -- not just women -- talk during games about all kinds of topics. Had you not made points about the fact that their husbands were the ones there to see the game - not them, and assumed that they were talking about sales, and filming an episode of Real Housewives, perhaps it wouldn't have come off as misogynistic. Were you more annoyed by the fact that their seats were located behind home plate - in prime view of television audiences - and should therefore be conscious of the fact that people are watching and noticing that they are not paying attention to the game?
What exactly did you mean when you said "Their husbands are going man, don’t bring your wife next time"? To me and others, that sounds like you are saying that the only people interested in baseball games are men and that they just dragged their wives against their will. Were these women there with husbands? Do you know that they are wives? That also sounds like you are saying "don't bring women to the ballpark because they're not interested." If that is not what you meant, can you explain what you did mean?
When you said "There must be a sale tomorrow going on here or something" what did you mean? How was the implication that all women talk about with each other is sales and shopping misconstrued?
When you said "I was just thinking, those women, there's a new series Real Housewives of D.C. that just came out. Maybe they're filming an episode?" what did you mean? How was this misconstrued?
Maybe you didn't mean it to sound sexist, but re-reading those comments, you can certainly see how it was construed the way it was.
I'll be happy to update my blog post on the subject to clarify what you really did mean, aside from just trying to be funny. I look forward to your response.

Re: OH: Twitter Is Hiring. It's not just about the points and badges and number of checkins. It's about the shared experiences, self-expression and connections that develop through its use. Why don't I check in at McDonalds if I'm grabbing some fries on my way home? It doesn't say anything about me - there's no experience to be shared. But if I were traveling in Italy and stopped at the first McDonalds in Rome, THAT I might want to share.

Do I get a badge for checking in on the R train? Hell no. But the train I ride in NYC is part of my experience; it represents the sections of the city I frequent and what I associate my daily life with.

If I check in at my local bar and I'm the mayor because I'm the only one in my neighborhood on Foursquare, what does that "mayor" association mean? Nothing, really. The bar probably has no knowledge of Foursquare and isn't going to give me a free beer. But at this bar I happened to try a local Brooklyn beer I haven't found anywhere else and want to share that experience with my friends. That's where the value comes in.

Foursquare was valuable at SXSW not because of the 16 new badges introduced but because it allowed people to find and connect with each other in new ways, and share their common experiences.

The true value of Foursquare is discovering the hidden fudge in the middle of the ice cream sundae. Badges, points and mayorships are just the cherry on top.

-dana / @dwag29 / edgeofbrooklyn.com / foursquare.com/user/dwag29

Re: Twitter: “We Screwed Up” on #fixreplies

you took the words right out of my mouth. there are soooooooooo many inactive accounts due to people who sign up just to see what twitter is about or because they hear oprah is on it, but never tweet. and then there are the spammers who don't actually read the tweets of the 10,000 people they follow.

if twitter could query their db based on a minimum # of tweets sent to determine "active" users, the number who use the all @replies setting would likely be much higher than 3%. not exactly scientific but it would tell them more about how valuable the feature has become.

also, even if only 3% of your users are your "most active" users, do you really want to abruptly change the way they use your service? that 3% has likely made twitter into much of what it is today.

Re: Twitter’s Most Moronic Change: Removing @ Reply Settings

One more thought: I posted earlier on Twitter that I am often disappointed in a brand I like when I discover that they just use Twitter to "broadcast" promotions, blog posts, etc but not engage with their users. When I look at a brand's Twitter stream I can gauge immediately how much they interact with their users (For an example of a brand that engages well with its 3,500 followers, check out @popcap_games. For an example of a brand which does a poor job of engaging with its 341 followers, which breaks my heart because I looooooove Brooklyn Industries, check out @Brooklyn2009). By taking away @replies in the front of a post, I will totally miss seeing this engagement off the bat.

Now, maybe brands will adjust and write "Thanks for the feedback, @dwag29" instead of "@dwag29 Thanks for the feedback" but probably not if it's just easy to hit the "reply" button which puts the @name first. Unless this is something else Twitter plans to change...

Re: Twitter’s Most Moronic Change: Removing @ Reply Settings

whoa, didn't realize i used so many all-caps words there. i guess i'm more upset about this than i realized.

Re: Twitter’s Most Moronic Change: Removing @ Reply Settings

Just posted this on Twitter regarding the change:
"NOT happy about the @reply change. Twitter is about conversation and discovery. I like conversation & discovery. #twitterfail #@replyfail"

You are right in that Twitter has underestimated its users and how they have defined its growth. I'm actually surprised that they are still leading with "What are you doing?" when it really should be Facebook's "What's on your mind?" (In fact, FB & Twitter should switch those because that's how people use them more frequently).

Twitters USERS made it about conversation and discovery, not "eating a burrito for lunch" which is what non-Tweeps think it is about based on the "What are you doing" lead.

Another GREAT example of how this debacle will hurt conversation & discovery: @SuzeOrmanShow replies to EVERY SINGLE finance question she gets. She has over 11,000 followers, not just because she is a celeb, but because she provides valuable information and actually responds to and engages with all her followers. Usually, I read her replies and then click on "in reply to @user" if I want to read the original question. However, I do not wish to follow the thousands that send Suze a tweet. So now I won't be able to see those replies? And Suze will have to find another way to reply to questions so that her followers see them?

Bad move, @Twitter. RECALL NOW.

(Just saw that the #1 trending topic is #fixreplies -- above Adam Lambert, Kris Allen, Star Trek, Kobe, American Idol... they have to respond)

Re: Zappos' long tail: 3.4 million products

zappos has been a huge success story in the online retailer market this past year. i honestly don't know anyone who has not used zappos... between their customer-friendly shipping policy and the ease with which the company has embraced the social media landscape (i follow @zappos on twitter), they are a true model for long-term success in a crowded marketplace. kudos to them.
