Ken, how do some Virginia peanuts sound? ;-)

I also wanted to point out that I think you two are doing what you're debating at present—discussing two sides of an issue cordially. I'm wondering on a larger PCA scale if both of you would agree that the Keller-Duncan debate on women deacons at last year's GA was a good example of charitable debate over a significant issue. Quiet apart from the content, I know several men who commented on how well Duncan and Keller articulated their position in brotherly love. What do you think?

Re: Why I Might Make It

Absolutely. But 58 doesn't address who is directly involved other than the minister although the assumption is that the session is present and likely active in administration. Maybe someone with more knowledge of BCO or precedent can comment.

Re: The Overture that was My Fault

Which is why I think its good. It's called Ruling Elder ordination (BCO 24). I don't think we are going to see much change on a denominational level or a presbyterial level until we start seeing change on a sessional level (grass roots something or other). In terms of biblical requirements there is not that much difference between a licensed RE and a TE. It's one thing for us to say, "Hey I want to see ethnically diverse, theologically astute, Jesus-loving, pastorally gifted men planting and leading churches out there." It's quite another thing to say, "I want to see ethnically diverse, theologically astute, Jesus-loving, pastorally gifted men serving with me on my session." And then to take it a step further and make it a reality.

Re: Can We Say We’re Connectional?

Could Covenant College or Ridgehaven hold the whole assembly? It is also a significant difference in perspective between our older elders and younger elders. I wasn't even born in 1973. So I have never experienced the kind of fortitude in the face of conflict that was required of our founding members. But from stories I've heard, those men would agree with the reasons in this post and probably be able to add a few more.

I'd be interested in hearing what other guys answer your question, Sam.

Re: 3 Reasons You Should Like the SP Before you Read It

That was my problem. I couldn't really deal with the plan because I approached it with preemptive prejudice. But if I approached the plan assuming the best and found it to be suspicious or condescending then I would be in a much better place to definitively respond rather than just spouting off out of some sort of grump reflex. And I really didn't find the suspicion and condescension in the plan like you did—although I plan to give it another read before GA. It seemed they were tasked with and provided diagnosis and prescription. Albeit, if I were PCA Pontiff, my diagnosis would be less dire and my prescription more conservative.

Re: 3 Reasons You Should Like the SP Before you Read It

I'm not sure. Someone with more knowledge of the parliamentary history of the PCA would have to answer that question. I'm always grateful for your balanced reasoning and gracious delivery (online and off). I understand the danger of surrendering too much power to "leaders" or even just those we delegate to perform a specific function. At the same time we need to trust people who have differing gifts and experiences than our own to do jobs delegated to them. I'm admitting I don't always know the line between those two poles—surrendering two much power and trusting other men. I also see the merit in discussing minutia—even though (as you nailed me) I'm a big vision guy who has a bad habit of speaking in vague and glowing terms. I know that in my daily ministry I'm constantly having to decide what is the best of use of my limited time—often having to say no to good things. I'm arguing that the same has to be true of our denomination. And I'm also arguing that I'm unsure specifically about the validity of this particular issue. But I was sincerely curious to see the responses above (despite the post written with a tongue-in-cheek slant). Maybe the AC/SP plans do need more discussion than I'd like to give them. I suppose I'll see whether I like it or not. Sorry for the long reply, and thanks again for the response.

Re: 10 Reasons I’m PCA and in the Acts 29 Network

Thanks man. I also know folks outside of the PCA that use and appreciate the resources provided by MNA.

I participate in A29 for the same reasons that I use curriculum in addition to those produced by CE&P and GCP, encourage missionaries outside of MTW, went to a college other than Covenant College, went to a seminary other than Covenant, participated in youth conferences outside of Ridgehaven, have retirement accounts outside of PCARBI and so on. And at the same time I love and support those standing committees and ministries of PCA.

God is working in Reformed evangelicalism well beyond the borders of the PCA. To recognize that, encourage that, and participate in that is a crucial aspect of the doctrine of the communion of the saints. If I've played out all those then I hit up the Jazz Essentials station on Pandora. Classical is always Schubert or Handel. But I can't study to anything with lyrics.
