I cringe every time I hear this longevity argument. Life expectancy at birth increases as the average of how long people live. So, if you avoid an infant's death, that adds 80 some years to the average. If you avoid the death of an 80 year old (through the miracle of modern medicine) you add maybe a year to the average. Most of the increase in longevity in the last 100 years has come from avoiding infant deaths. So maybe Rick meant too many babies are living long enough to grow old. Infanticide as US policy?
