His life is book-ended by two of the most tumultuous periods in China's recent history: he grew up in the 1970's as China opened its borders to a flood of imported goods and ideas, and today he works in an environment of unprecedented economic and cultural growth. He is a prominent figure among a generation of impressive young Chinese photographers. The brand new shining patron of the art of chinese photography is none other than our old college pal, Hewlett Packard. I hear he's doing well. Most of the work from this festival is pretty subpar, but a few big names cuaght my eye. This photographer was likely included as the hook artist. Wang Ning De has long been a favorite of the contemporary art scene in China. I'm still learning the ropes of photo criticism, so all I can say about his work now is, "enjoy it, it's like lying down in the ocean."

i know, i can't wait for more entries! i don't know if you've already written one, but i've been craving a post from you about the local variations on staple home foods (e.g. bindaedduk, kong gooksu, gehran bbap) out there. i know nothing about it, but imagine student type cafes/diners must each have their own take.

Between 1994 and 1999, he was the on-air film critic for KGO-TV (ABC) in San Francisco. Then he was fired, about two weeks after saying something unpleasant about The Phantom Menace. Coincidence? Maybe.
