I agree that Ahok's motorcycle ban is not addressing the problem correctly. The problem is not the high number of motorcycles on the streets. It is how a very large number of motorcycles are blatantly ignoring traffic rules -- going the wrong way in a one-way street, not stopping at red lights, etc.

If Ahok really wants to address the problem, he should push for police to enforce traffic rules. The police are the ones to blame here. They have been letting motorcycles to violate rules right in front of their noses.

Spot on, Harry. It's great that Evernote is very well funded and expanding. As a paid user, this gives me comfort. But I'm worried that they're expanding too broadly and forget about the one thing that matters the most: user experience. Steve Jobs has been quoted to say that he's as proud of things Apple did NOT do as he is of the things Apple did. I'd like to see Evernote has the same discipline.

I discovered your blog from the Indonesian version of that DailySocial article. Like a few people have commented on that article, the statistics for the countries are really out of whack. Canada has 3x Facebook users as its total population, etc. I have serious question about the credibility of the data provider (SocialBakers).

Hi Ian, did you just make a parallel between Indonesia and Silicon Valley? In technology? I never thought anybody would do that in my lifetime.

Anyway, what you wrote is interesting. But I think you made too quick of a judgement after just talking with a few people over 1 week in Jakarta. I think recently in Indonesia we're seeing a lot of businesses and advertisers jumping into social media, and Twitter has a large appeal due to its very low friction in the sign up process (in fact you don't even need to register to see the advertisers' tweets). I think you arrived in Jakarta during this recent phenomenon. Whether Twitter will overtake Facebook is still a big question mark.

Meskipun servisnya gratis untuk pengguna bukan berarti perusahaannya nggak ada revenue. YouTube itu punya Sales 1 miliar dolar. Dan btw mereka nggak bisa dibandingkan dengan Netflix karena produknya beda.

Sebenarnya boleh dibilang semua produk gratis Google akhirnya berguna untuk menjual adsense dan adwords. Jadi boleh dibilang produk2 gratis tersebut adalah Sales funnel nya Google. Sales funnel tersebut gratis jadi dipakai banyak pengguna yang kemudian mendatangkan revenue puluhan miliar dolar. Kalau mau saingan dengan Google harus investasi ratusan juta dolar untuk membuat tandingan produk2 gratis tersebut.

Shitty? I think it's brilliant.

Indonesia dapat mention dari Sarah Lacy dan TechCrunch lalu pikir kita bisa bikin Twitter baru. IMHO strtup revolusioner sepwrti Twitter cuma bisa mulai di Silicon Valley dengan ekosistem yang sudah lahir dari 40 tahun yang lalu; dengan VCnya yang sudah pernah ambil untung milyaran $ dari Google, Apple IPO dll. Jakarta masih jauh dari sana.

Semua entrepreneur memang harus belajar. Saya yakin sebentar lagi entrepreneur2 Indonesia akan figure out model bisnis yang cocok untuk startup di Indonesia dan kemudian dapat kepercayaan VC dan mendatangkan return profit buat VC tersebut. Perlu waktu saja.

I totally appreciate you spending the time to read and respond to my blog post. And yeah, I was too lazy that day to write an opinion on my own about the subject :).

First, running a business is hard. Even if the idea is not original, making a business successful/profitable is extremely tough. For some entrepreneurs, making money is enough to keep going. For other entrepreneurs, money is not the primary objective. These are the inventors -- people who get satisfaction from coming up with new things. Without these people we won't have the Dyson vacuum cleaner and you're still typing on your smartphone with a stylus. So while there's a lot of smart and successful business owners in Indonesia, it would be nice to see more inventors.

Second, the VC judged Indonesian entrepreneurs in a "condescending way" as you put it, probably because VCs are always looking for the next billion dollar idea. The next "Facebook" idea will make a billion dollar, but the next Facebook-clone will not. The clone may be profitable, and may make a successful exit (see Disdus), but it will not be a world-changing startup.

Memang kalau kita lihat pasar domestik di Jepang dan China, yang merajai adalah startup lokal mereka. Tapi saya rasa sebabnya bukan terutama karena rakyatnya cinta produk lokal, tapi karena startup lokal di negara itu menjawab kebutuhan market negara itu. Bahasa dan alfabet yang digunakan di negara2 tersebut menjadi barrier bagi produk dari negara lain untuk masuk. Market lokal juga lebih condong untuk memakai produk yang berbahasa lokal. Selain itu banyak produk seperti Facebook, Google, yang diblok di China.

Ini berbeda dengan poin yang ditulis Rama di artikel, yaitu pilih produk berdasarkan kualitas, bukan negara asal. Pengguna Internet Indonesia banyak yang bisa berbahasa Inggris dan market Indonesia juga terbuka luas untuk produk asing masuk. Karena itu persaingan benar2 bebas dan startup Indonesia juga harus bisa bersaing dengan produk luar.

Setuju 1000% dengan artikel ini. Internet justru mendobrak batasan geografis. IMHO, pola pikir "harus pakai produk Indonesia" harus dirubah di masa sekarang ini. Dengan adanya internet, mau nggak mau Indonesia harus bersaing dengan seluruh dunia. Mengharuskan pakai produk Indonesia justru tidak mendidik produsen dalam negeri untuk bersaing.

BTW, ini berlaku juga untuk startup entrepreneur. Entrepreneur Indonesia nggak harus bikin produk yang target ke pasar Indonesia saja.

Insightful... Another example is StumbleUpon, whose very purpose is discovery. It has more than 10 million users despite pretty much flying under the radar.
