Look, I was a Vampire Weekend dissenter for as long as I could possibly hold out but I got over it. They're just too good to be left out of the top 10 because of a commercial that turned a good song of theirs into a constant annoyance. That album is fantastic. I'll probably never listen to "Holiday" voluntarily again, however. While we're on the subject, I think perfect 10.0 scores are complete b***s***. Really? It doesn't get better than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy? I might as well hang up my headphones in that case.

Also must add that, though I've had plenty of comic geekdom moments throughout the years, I had no idea of the existence of the source material until near the movie release date, and I thought the whole thing sounded truly awful. I thought the previews sucked. So that could be a reason it's not finding paydirt, despite such awesome reviews from the critics and the public.

Holy wow, I didn't see this until now. Which means little Jimmy probably won't see this response either for another 8 months...

I'm a giant fan of Sufjan as an artist, as many many other people are. But the truth is, as he has every right in the world to make whatever music he wants and share it (or not share it), I have every right to like it or not like it. Stating a preference has nothing to do with being imposingly selfish, it just IS. I don't particularly enjoy his recent musical output and that, in fact, is disappointing to me. If you think there's something wrong with this statement, maybe you should move to Canada or something.

The fact is, without an audience, Sufjan would have no monetary platform from which to weave his magnificent sonic tapestries. Also, just because someone is an amazing musician/artist does not make them above criticism/disappointment.

I like what you like, you like what you like. That's the best part about this whole thing. It's not selfish to want/need something as a listener. It's not wrong of Sufjan to wait 5 years between albums, or not want to give one to us at all. It's just torture, plain and simple.

This comment is hilarious. Does Yahoo! have its own browser that I don't know about? Or its own cell phone? G-mail is by far the best online e-mail client. Maps, by far the best web-map. The best search. The best image search. The best subject-targeted ad placement system. Blogger. Ok, yahoo! has better fantasy sports. I can't stand navigating their homepage.

<--- graduated from Virginia Tech. The CT is/was a fantastic newspaper while I was a student in Blacksburg. Great graphics, snappy layout, and good columns. I also think it's a wuss move to comment anonymously, but it can also serve a valuable role on the internet. I've written many things anonymously that I felt brought meaningful impact to its readers without having to divulge my information to a bunch of random strangers and expose myself personally or professionally.

What. An. Interview. Almost exhausting, really.

And yet I still like him. Why? Because he's one of the most interesting celebrities of our time and is unquestionably one of the most talented. Because of interviews like this one. Who else would say 1/10th of the things he reveals? Who else even could? He's simultaneously the most alienating person on earth and somehow seems to feel pretty much exactly how I think I'd feel in his situation. He wants to be liked. Who doesn't?

He loves himself, though. A lot. He obsesses over himself and how others perceive him and it's offputting, but it still cuts a little close to home. He's genuinely hilarious, inquisitive, introspective and blunt. Open almost beyond imagination. For this, I like him.

Definitely a douchebag, though. Definitely.

Look, I have no idea why he decided that THIS was going to be the thing he decided to speak up on, thus probably ruining his career forever, but he makes some completely valid points. And some pretty dumb ones. The valid ones I speak of are related to the "unconditional giving", and the rebuilding-without-plan-for-future-prevention-of-the-same-thing kind of points. Imagine a scenario where New Orleans is hit by another storm in 5 years and endures very similar flooding and destruction. This is completely possible. Is the rest of the world going to be as supportive as it was the first time? It certainly won't and I'm not sure it should be.

The fact is that we are a giving people, for one reason or another. We want to feel good about ourselves, mostly. People donate all this money on American Idol Gives Back every year, and hey, we can write it off on our taxes, too! It's amazing that we were able to raise so much for Haiti (and the tsunami before it, New Orleans before it, and NYC before that) and these places certainly needed it right at that moment. I have no idea why Mr. Shirley dedicated so many words to this subject, but I don't think it should all be brushed under the bed without a second thought. Shouldn't have written it though. Perhaps he was drunk?

Also, I've read Paul's stuff on ESPN for the last few years and it's often pretty entertaining. For an athlete, he's a pretty good writer. Whatever that even means.
