I don't think I've ever disagreed as strongly as I do with this review. I honestly hold the complete opposite opinion of nearly every note you gave. Star Trek, in my humble, humble opinion, was the best movie I've seen in the theaters since Wall-E. I just saw Terminator by the way and it is BAD.

I mean right off the bat - how is this film's chronology garbled? The film opens with Kirk's father and mother - brilliantly portrayed by Chris Hemsworth and Jennifer Morrison - trying to escape the grasps of Nero, who has traveled back in time. Just because a character travels back in time (a brilliantly crafted plot device used to cover up and fix future Star Trek movie flubs, sort of like Superman Returns tried to do by just ignoring 2 movies altogether), doesn't mean the movie is jumbled. The only scene that goes back in time is the mindmeld, which simply explains why Nero was in the wrong decade in the first place.

Characters being flat? I thought character development was the best aspect of this picture. Every single actor perfectly portrayed the character they were trying to, and added SO much more to their roles. Karl Urban could not have done a better job. I think because I was a huge Star Trek fan, I had 90% of the backstory and references that maybe were needed, but that's exactly where this movie's genius lies. There were so many in-jokes to trekkies (almost every line), but it was still a really entertaining summer blockbuster. Some of those wide-shots were killer. This movie was made to re-energize the Star Trek name, and it absolutely nailed it.

I'm still not buying the argument that J.J. Abrams can't direct a feature length movie. This movie felt so well paced to me that I felt - for the first time in SO long - that I was in the hands of someone who knew how to tell a story. The shot of the enterprise coming out of warp to help Spock is so predictable but still so rewarding. We expect the story to be where it is, and we're so happy that Abrams does too. Besides the ridiculous Delta Vega Snow planet scene, every scene flowed into the next perfectly.

Kirk hanging off of all the ledges was homage to the original series.
Uhura, and most girls in the Shatner series, were mini skirt wearing eye pieces. At least they gave her a skill and had her replace a male because of her talent. She is, after all, the only female bridge member. And having the relationship and "dick measuring" between Kirk and Spock was the whole point of the movie! This is to show the start of the relationship of the two head officers of the 1701 U.S.S. Enterprise, which featured one of the two of them as the lead in every episode in the series. One more thing - they weren't trying for Han Solo. They were trying for a young James T. Kirk - who came before any Star Wars movie.

Re: bitten tongue.

thats a great poem lyric craig. i want you to write a poem right now using that line. send it to me by tomorrow night.
