We need a revolution in the way companies acquire capital. Unfortunately the capital industry is heavily regulated and "crowdfunding" startups are facing huge legal challenges. Luckily nation states like Singapore are competing on that front as well. (GrowVC is one of such startups operating from Hong Kong).

This assumes of course that a "crowd" or group can supply capital needs for long term ambitious projects. In reality, you probably need a couple of "optimistic" rich guys to fill that role. We need more of those. Ironically, inequality in wealth can have a very positive effect here. The exact opposite that the "real world" is arguing for.

Re: It's Always Sunny in Silicon Valley - Businessweek

It is incredibly silly to suggest that the $41 million invested in Color Labs could've been used to fund "research into the next wave of clean energy" or "advanced artificial intelligence". How naive is this author? Where do you think actual "real" technology comes from? It comes from companies like Color Labs that experiment with "advanced artificial intelligence". And Sequoia Capital has made many today's miracles possible. The judge is still out on Color Labs and even if they fail, there will be others that did manage to improve our lives. This is how this industry works.

It's also clear to me that the author doesn't understand how technology impacts the world.

In the Dot Com Bubble companies that IPO'ed had actual revenue, but the revenue came from each other. The value produced to customers was almost non-existent. For example another online pet food store without anyone in the world ever shopping online.

Fast-forward a decade and it's clear that information technology is changing the world. Facebook is becoming the biggest country in the world and there is a huge third-wave economy forming outside of "reality". The value added to people (outside of the Valley) goes way beyond Farmville and Angry Birds. Companies like SalesForce and many others are making "real" organizations more efficient, more competitive and this will have the indirect effect of lower prices and better prosperity for people outside of the valley too.

If there is any industry that has had a positive effect on people's live in the past decades, it's probably this one. That's why I think it's very disturbing that the author tries to equate this industry to the financial sector and the corruption that's going on there. The reason why the valley has thrived is because the government hasn't been able to pervert it. Yet.

Re: Just How Popular Are Unofficial Twitter Clients?

I do wonder what effect SXSW has on those March 11 numbers

Re: "Do" it fast! - How To Node - NodeJS

Haha, this is exactly what I needed!

Re: Blog rolling with mongoDB, express and Node.js - How To Node

Nice write-up!
