You can't turn off Wi-Fi. This new feature does not require you to connect to a network, but you still need a working WiFi antenna so your iPhone can crete an ad hoc network (same happens with AirDrop, however it uses Bluetooth and AirPlay will probably use WiFi Direct).

Also, since we haven't tested it yet, we're not sure whether this feature is present in the current iOS 8 beta or not. Apple TV might need an update, too.

And no, using AirPlay is definitely NOT “pretty much the

Oh, how petty. The second method is just an alternative way
in case there are issues with AirPlay. And yes, it’s actually always VIA an Apple TV, not ON, since the Apple TV doesn’t have a screen, but it’s just the way all tech bloggers used to say.

in general AirPlay supports 5.1, if the video you're streaming contains 5.1 audio, AirPlay will stream 5.1 to your 5.1 capable receiver. On the Apple TV set Dolby Digital to "On"

Well, it all depends on your target. We are also fond of the very expensive (for what iOS apps are usually priced) port of Anki for iOS. It's awesome, plays very nice with the desktop and online versions and offers a truckload of features. But, YMMV and you have to grow with your app, not pick just the trendy one. Great for you to have one you love!

Nope, it's only for the aTV1, needs an internal hard disk (and an Intel-like processor)

If it is an Apple TV2, there is no way. For Apple TV1.... There are some ways, but it's not easy. Why not let your friend jailbreak your aTV?

Even if you have sftp via sshd, you have to set up the permissions as in the end of the post. Then it is just a matter of wanting secure transfers or not even bothering. You could even use scp if you were so inclined (and scp usually gets better transfer speeds, depending a little on the networking)

no, 3G doesn't support AirPlay. you need at least 3GS
