Há sítios e sítios, há lugares onde as pessoas acabam por ter melhores condições do que com os familiares, é triste dizer isto eu sei. E há soluções intermédias, como alguém de fora que venha e diminua um pouquinho o trabalho e com quem a tua mãe possa desabafar... sei lá, mas força aí.

Isso é simplesmente horrível, tens de obrigar a tua mãe a procurar ajuda. Independentemente do dever que ela possa sentir (e que existe de facto), nenhuma pessoa tem capacidade de suportar esse tipo de peso psicológico no longo prazo. :/

my technical advice: go, but for a PhD and not erasmus program or equivalent. You can also try a trainee internship while finishing your masters if you can manage both things. Please avoid as much as possible not getting a full degree ASAP, trust me (I fucked myself that way and I regret it everyday (pardon my french)).

you can easily become a teacher in the UK actually, I also have a teacher's degree and a lot of my college friends went teaching in london and win loads of cash. There's quite a big amount of portuguese teachers in the UK.

You mustn't forget that USA is a very young country unlike european countries that have a "people" that's been living in that territory for centuries (portugal is an extreme example of stable boundaries and people). This has a big impact in the way culture and social inheritance is perceived, you don't really have an american model to feel attached to nor to feel excluded from. That component comes from your own personal/family history.

On the other hand it's also a question of volume I suppose. Here you have, I don't know, 95% portuguese people (portuguese by several generations), and a small amount of inmigrants, and even those of 2nd generation still identify themselves with the culture of origin, it's less frequent to be confronted with that situation.

Having written this I just realized that It's not by chance that in the USA there are no equivalents of ETA or other extremist-nationalist groups.

Sorry, I used "you" in a confusing way, the ass part was obviously not about you.

Also, conflicts and fights are part of a relationship, you're not supposed to make sure they don't happen. They *should* happen, get resolved and make the relation evolve.

Anyway, I'm not trying to lecture you, just hang on, we always tend to make things seem worse than they are.

You know, sometimes it's not something that happens or somehing you do or don't do. You just realize you are not happy, and will never be, even if the other person involved has nothing at fault. When you realize this, it becomes dishonest to go on as you become aware that you're keeping the other person from finding the truly right person.

Either this or you've broken up because you were just a complete ass/bitch all along, and the other person was too in love to notice.

Either way, you just have to deal with it, and I don't think that it's ok to wait for someone to make you forget, you have to deal with it yourself. Yes, life is unfair, but if you always knew what was going to happen next that would be like going to gamefaqs.com all the time, and we all know that going to gamefaqs is giving in to the dark side.

(Also, if I were you, I'd remove the "Beat me at video games" from your list. Trust me, it becomes really annoying in the long run.)
