I thought Gyarados was Water/Flying purely because it was TOO STRONK and needed a double weakness to be less overpowered
But maybe I'm giving Game Freak's Gen I beta testers (assuming they existed) too much credit there

Pinsir does look kind of neotenous, like it never finished metamorphosing - which is why it's so cool that the Mega form cracks open and reveals a set of wings. It finally became an adult!

Fun fact: Heracross was meant to be introduced in Gen I, as a sort of heroic counterpart to the more villainous-looking Pinsir. They were meant to be a Japanese Bug Fight duo.

fun fact: since Tangela evolves into Tangrowth by leveling up while knowing "Ancient Power" (a Rock-type move traditionally associated with fossil Pokemon), it's often speculated that Tangrowth is supposed to look like a caveman

I was never one of those nostalgia-blinded people who like to claim that the newer Pokemon are all terrible or that the series' art style has changed for the worse, but Rhyperior pretty much sums up everything I dislike about certain trends in newer Pokemon designs. It trades in Rhyhorn and Rhydon's organic-looking structures for a bunch of tacked-on orange plates that, frankly, look lazily thrown on, as if the designers were concerned about it being too monochromatic. Not only does it have the Triangular Anime Eyes, but it has oversized eyebrows to cap them off, turning it into even more of a Dreamworks Face Pokemon. It can't just be a rock-monster animal anymore; it has to be some kind of outlandish robotic-looking creature, complete with tacked-on cannon arms.

I'm not sure exactly what dissatisfies me so much about it, especially when so many of its qualities are present in other Pokemon that I like better. I guess it just seems like too much of a departure from the really nice designs of its preevolutions.

It's interesting that Exeggcute is always shown with six eggs, and Exeggutor is always shown with three heads. Do groups of Exeggcute split in half before evolving into a pair of Exeggutor? Or do pairs of Exeggcute meld during evolution, going from six heads to three doubly-powerful heads.

Fun fact: I've had a Magneton or a Magnezone on every one of my teams since I started playing Pokemon with Gold and Silver.
Also personally I think Magnezone was cool enough to justify all those other terrible evolutions that got introduced in Diamond and Pearl

it's also interesting that Paras has a mouth and Parasect doesn't. I like to think that Paras spends most of its life eating, and Parasect is a strictly reproductive stage; it and its mushroom subsist on built-up nutrients while they search for a mate. I think there are real insects that do that, right?

I wrote this because I always think of something like this whenever I read a story where a woman's baby is turning into some horrible demon. How would a father react in that situation?

It's one of the few story templates where the presence of additional men makes it MORE interesting imho lol

Some background: I wrote this story for a horror zine that was only accepting submissions below a certain triple-digit word count. Said zine never got off the ground, but I thought the story was still pretty good, and so I submitted it here. There's no intended "twist" or traditional "climax", but sometimes that's how life is.

I started to clue in about a quarter of the way through ("oh, these creatures/beings pretend to be humans as part of a game"), but the "Mush Pot" really threw me for a loop. Not in a bad way - it made me curious instead of angry and confused - but I'm still not sure exactly what it's supposed to imply.

I think the bear and the snake are supposed to have the same kind of things on their heads - probably the source of their lightning-powers. My theory is that it's some kind of electrosensitive organ that replaced their eyes and eventually gained a secondary use as a defensive measure.
