Oliver Stone making a movie about Chavez somehow reminds me of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon's backing of the movie Inchon (Laurence Olivier as General MacArthur). I really don't know why...maybe because of the equally outrageous incongruity of both films' comradery.

In the end I suppose his sexual morality dilemma pales when compared to the criminal/ethical issue of selling/trading influence.

It's ridiculous to hear that his level of protection may be described as or actually become inadequate. I signed the petition out of respect for the man and the office. Viva Baracka! I don't like everything he stands for or everything he's doing but I'll support ANYTHING that keeps him alive.

(Are we sure this isn't just more hysteria though - this time from the left? It really doesn't matter but I'm getting oh so tired of feeling manipulated by both 'sides' of the political spectrum.)

That is an interesting focus - "...what they can do to help the president". Maybe it would have been wiser to reiterate Kennedy's "ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country".
We're letting all the rest of adult culture trickle down to the youth, why don't we try letting responsibility trickle down too. Might that be good indoctrination?

Tuci78 - thank you for further confirming my own opinion of nuclear energy. Surely there are dangers to handling nuclear fuel, I'm sure you'd agree which ones they are. However, most of the criticism could be called 'voodoo misinformation' - paranoid superstition dispensed by superstitious paranoiacs.

Beihai - I think the way you frame the question is symptomatic of the problem with the debate - "If you don't think Health care or education are basic rights, then there is no use in arguing".

Maybe saying "do you really think that unequal or even inadequate access to healthcare and education creates the kind of lives for our fellow citizens that we want them to have? Does such inequality or inadequacy create the kind of citizens we want? Would we not all benefit as a country if we had healthier and smarter fellow citizens?" Just a thought.

I'm all for reform of healthcare or education provision that allows for better, fairer, easier access for every CITIZEN that does not put the entirety of the burden to pay for such measures on any party (government or business community or social class) that might be detrimentally effected or unfairly targeted in the assignment of funding responsibility (through the amassing of further public debt, forcing them to pay for the benefits, their shouldering of the tax load, etc). Citizens that benefit from such reform should also expect that it will require them to do their part in acquiring the healthcare coverage and/or education - shoulder some of the costs, government service work, "payment in kind" programs, etc.

jtlastow, I've never heard Mr. Beck nor did Greg_B state that God was on their side. Please refrain from groundless ad hominem attacks. "Immoral" is a defensible use of the term when referring to race-baiters and people that insinuate the advocacy of armed insurrection such as Van Jones.

I've got some REAL issues with Beck myself...I'm trying to figure out if he was as aggressive in complaining about Patriot Act trampling of individual rights/The Constitution as he has been in his present defense of The Constitution and its survival.

Let's have some perspective here - we all know that he was a "9-11 Truther". Why are "Birthers" labeled lunatics and not "Truthers"? I remember seeing Bill Clinton notably derided a Truther that heckled him during a speech - sensible Democrats criticize them. This is one factor that created rampant polarization: "our loons are defensible but your loons are dangerous and scary". No, I dare say all loons are potentially dangerous and scary or at the very least best kept on the fringes. Beck took advantage of an opportunity handed to him. Better vetting might indeed translate to less vulnerabilities for the White House to defend.

A major concern of mine is the confusion it creates regarding an "ordinary citizen's" requisite response upon witnessing unidentified individuals brandishing arms in public. We're all heartened to hear when a lunatic's shooting spree is cut short or prevented through a courageous "nobody's" intervention. I shudder to think that somewhere in the future, a person who might otherwise become a hero will delay for too long as they assess whether a gunman is killer or plainclothes detective.

Why don't you try working in the construction industry for ten+ years and lose your job to "The Great Recession" only to watch your illegal immigrant neighbors still going out everyday to work their construction jobs AND THEN TELL ME HOW XENOPHOBIC DOBBS IS? The handling of the illegal immigration issue in this country is a farce. I have watched the illegal immigrant employing construction companies in my area decimate the African American owned construction companies all the while asking myself where the 'pro-black vote' Democratic Party has been. Have you ever talked to a Black businessman or woman that's lost their business trying to compete against the unfair advantages provided to employers of illegal immigrants? I have. Have you ever talked to Black kids that can't get a job because they've been labeled 'lazy' in comparison to illegal immigrants? I have. When you do that you can tell me how xenophobic Dobbs is. Please stop trying to feel better about your politics by criticizing the politics of others. We don't need more Bourgeoisie indignation, we need results and clear minded processes.

I wholeheartedly support giving the illegals ALREADY here a path to citizenship and strongly feel they've earned it. However I am dead set against continuing gridlock on the illegal immigrant issue - it is well past time to resolve it - BECAUSE (IMHO) IT IS HURTING THE WORKING CLASS CITIZENS THE MOST - at this point.

Here's a suggestion I've floated before - why don't we fine each illegal immigrant who comes forward for amnesty/citizenship $1,000 - 5,000 each (plus back taxes) in order to apply for citizenship. Then we take the $12 Billion to $60 Billion we raise to (temporarily) cover the IMMEDIATE health insurance needs of the LEGITIMATELY uninsured CITIZENS (unemployed, etc.) for the next one or two years and we back off ramming the 'healthcare reform' package through Congress until we correct the economy FIRST. Makes so much sense it won't happen - besides it would give the Democrats two less things to complain about.

Are you serious? How's ignoring the human rights/voter fraud crisis in Iran for starters? How about focusing on just about everything BUT the economy? How about not making effective headway in nuclear disarmament talks with North Korea and Iran? How about pushing through a stimulus bill that is filled with pork and has done little if anything to help put people back to work (that last part of particular interest to me since I've been unemployed since last year)? How about no real gains in establishing the "Green Economy" (another interest of mine as I've done extensive work in the re-use/recycling/salvage/up-cycling/waste stream diversion economy on many levels - material sales to interior design installations with found item constructs to furniture/fixtures made from recovered stock)?

I am a registered democrat, have been my entire adult life. I've also been a openly socialistic person most of my life - until I recently realized that the consequence of making my socialist pipe dreams a reality might be bankrupting this country's economy with the possible subsequent effect of damaging the integrity of our Constitutional democracy/republic. I liked dreaming of universal healthcare and universal education when it could be worked into the system in place - without damaging or destroying it. I do not like the idea of ramming them through and consequences be damned.
