I'm a big fan of clean diesels, too -- I love these cars for their high-mileage applications. But pouring unburned fuel straight into the air just to make a smoke screen? Not so much. Celebrate diesel for doing what it does well, and leave the smoke in the past where it belongs.

D. Watching it live, I sure didn't parse all of that all at once. My initial thoughts were that it was really, really aggressive, but once Taylor stuck his nose in there, he did a great job holding his line. I think his case would've been pretty weak if he'd locked up and pushed into Albuquerque, but he didn't (ahem, Gordon). The move *looked* like Albuquerque turning down on Taylor once he was beside him, even if Albuquerque was committed to a line already. I trust the IMSA stewards were able to draw on a lot of racing experience to make their decision, and I glad it wasn't me making the call.

D. I'm sorry -- I wish I could take Instagram seriously as a photo sharing site, but until there's a way to publish directly out of Lightroom, it's hard to see it as anything other than a novelty.

D. I usually don't mind hauling around multiple lenses -- I'm completely familiar with the tradeoffs necessary to make a huge zoom range like the 16-300 work, and frankly, if I can employ a dedicated prime, macro, telephoto -- what have you, I appreciate the results those lenses can produce (Tamron's 24-70 f/2.8, btw, is a great example -- marvelous IQ, but it's a lot of glass for a fraction of the zoom range).

There are times, though, when the all-in-one is really the right solution. A couple years ago, for instance, I brought my Canon 40D on a 10-day hiking trip. In order to cover the zoom range I wanted, I carried a 15-85 and a 70-300, which wound up being a lot more weight than a single-lens solution like the 16-300. Along the same lines, I've got a standing joke when I'm hiking that I can make a deer appear instantly just by swapping my tele lens for a wide-angle lens, so the versatility to cover all that range without swapping can be priceless at times, too.

Finally, I inevitably find that many of the shooting situations that cause me to want to swap lenses most frequently tend also to be those where I'd probably rather not swap lenses at the risk of introducing dust to my camera. In addition to hiking, I've found that at other outdoor activities like airshows or races, I frequently need to switch from wide to tele or vice-versa very quickly, and the remarkable range of the 16-300 might be the only lens on the market to really cover all that ground in a single mount.

The variable aperture 16-300 isn't the fastest lens around on the tele end, of course, which is one of the inevitable tradeoffs of this design, but Tamron's excellent VC would help quite a bit (again, I'm assuming the VC performance is comparable to the 24-70, which I loved). Since most of my use cases for this lens are daytime outdoor events, I think the 6.3 maximum aperture on the long end of the lens would be very manageable, and a small concession to be able to carry that kind of zoom range in a single lens.

D. I've been really happy with the 7D's AF, so if they've improved on that, I'm impressed. I was also really impressed with the improved Auto-ISO functionality -- it sounds a whole lot more like what I've wanted all along (upper / lower limits plus min shutter speed -- killer!).
