I drank 30-50 oz of diet soda per day. I didn't feel any better or generally notice any positive effects. Once golf season started, I started drinking soda again. It's more awesome than I remember. How people can drink coffee in the morning when they could have carbonated chemical goodness is beyond me.

Re: Hannity Guest: Science and Data Prove Trump is ‘Most Sound-Minded Person to Ever Occupy the White House’

Has an actual scientist ever used the phrase "uses science"?

Re: Question of the Day

The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History

I wouldn't normally read this kind of book but the guy who recommended it really sold it. Instructions to build from the internet. It's in my attic and reception has been outstanding since I built it.

DVR: Windows 7 with WMC and a Haupagge dual card. It's flaky and it will die someday. But it mostly works so I'm milking it for everything it's worth. I nearly bought a Tablo recently and that's probably what I'll get when this dies. I have a Synology NAS for my Plex stuff, so I'm set on storage for a Tablo when I pull the trigger.

Streaming: Roku 4 and Apple 2 on the main TV. Apple 2 on the secondary TV. I mostly use the Roku because I get Amazon, Plex, and Netflix in the same box. But I have to say the Netflix interface on the Apple is really superior IMO. It's just usually not worth clicking the source button to switch over. I want to get a Roku on the secondary so I can have Plex and Prime, but we don't watch enough to justify spending any money on it.

All of the stuff for the main TV lives in the basement storage room and runs through an Onkyo TX-NR636 receiver so plenty of HDMI ports. The Onkyo feeds the TV through an 80' HDMI cable that runs up the wall, through the attic, and down to the TV (that one was pricey, although they've come down considerably). The nice part about being in the basement is that I have tons of room for cable management and the HTPC I built didn't have to be "attractive" or quiet.

Re: 130 New Over-the-Air Stations Are Coming to Cord Cutters

What order is that list of cities in?

Re: The Jelly Bean Problem

If you start with two doors, then selecting and switching are both 50-50. I have 18 Application.OnKey statements in my PMW equivalent, plus a few more add-ins with hotkeys. The keys used to launch the code are mostly related to the code or a replacement of Excel's built-in hotkeys so they're easy to remember. But that doesn't prevent me from putting built-in Excel functions on the QAT for ease and I think I'll do that. I think 'Text to Columns', and 'Clear Filter' will go on there today and let's see if I can remember to use them.

Re: A tournament setback and some lessons to learn

I'm not so sure it was the decision making on 13 that was the problem. Put yourself back on 13, but this time you have to make the same choices you did the first time - so really you have no choice. What you would change? You can't change the decision to punch out of the hazard, so about the only thing you can change is the type of shot you intend to play and your swing thought. Make the choice for better or worse, but once you do, commit to it and make the best shot you can. It reminds me of your Driver Woes/Positive Priming post. It's like you were focused on your drop/no drop decision (internal) rather than visualizing what your punch shot would look like (external). Just my two cents.

Re: You Should Subscribe to Tech Podcasts

Thanks for posting these. At the end of every football season, I feel like I have nothing to listen to, so I'll be giving these a try. On the tech front, I've been listening to ATP. It's very Apple-centric (and I'm not) but it's still a good listen. If any of you readers are just getting started with The Stack Exchange Podcast, I encourage them to go back and find the one about how they recovered from Superstorm Sandy. That was a fascinating story.

Re: A club of change. We need a forum that is dedicated to serial television. You have to login to even read the forum. In your profile, you specify which shows you want to discuss and which episode you're on. All posts about shows other than the ones you've selected and all posts about shows airing later than the episode you've identified are hidden from you.

All posts must be tagged with the show and episode. No free-form tagging here. Every time you visit the site, the sidebar has a section for you to update where you are in the shows you've selected. If you've just finished ep. 3 season 2, you update your profile and some posts that were previously hidden are now shown.

Moderation would be a problem. If everyone followed the rules, you could read and discuss a show without spoilers. But mistagging, either by accident or on purpose, would blow up the whole thing. So you don't show anything until one other reader has agreed with the tagging. And that doesn't scale.

If you could work out that little problem, I think it would be a hugely successful site.

Re: Google Glass is not a trivial product

A wild turkey was walking across the fairway this weekend and I wanted to take a picture of it. I could have ran 30 feet to the golf cart, dug out my iphone, and tried to get a picture. If I were wearing Google Glass, well... Does that justify the cost (money and other)? Not even close. But it got me thinking about a golf GPS app for Google Glass. That might be useful.

Re: New Fargo intro dialog

I don't like "sub-folder folder". I think "subfolder" says it just as well. Also, I wouldn't say "need access". It's not just that you don't need access, it's that you're not taking access. I would say "You only authorize us to access that subfolder and we can't see anything else in your dropbox." I think that gives people a warm-fuzzy about their privacy.

Re: Strategic Humor: Cartoons from the May 2013 Issue

Everyone was strangely optimistic at the Pamplona Stock Exchange that day.

Re: Introducing Fargo!

I decided to make my first outline a summary of the keyboard shortcuts for Fargo. I think you need talent(result of genes) and skill(result of work) to do anything. It's the combination of the two that will determine your lot it life. If we put them both on an arbitrary 100 point scale, then you might hypothesize that it takes 160 to be a PGA golfer. If you're a 60 on the talent scale, you better work harder than every other person. If you're a 90, it will seem to come easier to you than others. If you're a 40, you probably won't get beyond the Nationwide tour no matter how hard you work. Of course, these number are made up and you can't measure them anyway - it's just a thought model.

I consider things like drive, motivation, courage, etc. to be a abilities like any other. You may be born, for example, with a predisposition to take risks or you may develop that ability through practice. Which brings me to my next point.

It's easy to think of golf as an ability and imagine a couple of sliding scales measuring talent and skill. But almost everything is more complex than that. Golf isn't an ability, it's the combination of 100 abilities. Some of those abilities are probably more important than others. Now instead of two sliding scales, there are 200 and they're weighted. If you list the top ten abilities necessary to be a golfer, baseball player, actuary, and homemaker, each list would probably have a lot of "soft" abilities. If you crack under pressure, it doesn't matter how well you lag putt, throw a curve ball, evaluate risk, or parent. You have to have drive, courage, self confidence, and discipline to be at the top of any field. Throw in a good short game, and you can be a great golfer. Throw in patience and teaching ability, and you can be a great parent.

Do you need talent? Yes, there's some minimum level you need to be a high achiever in your field. That minimum is less than most people think, I'd wager. People use lack of talent as an excuse not to do the work. Since you can't measure talent anyway, how would you know if you had it unless you put in the effort and failed? At that point you can say "I did the work, but just didn't have enough innate ability." And you'd be so much better for the experience, you'd move on and be successful in some other area.

Finally, this really has no bearing on The Dan Plan. If I could measure your talent and told you that you didn't have enough, would you stop? I doubt it. Everyone has to fill in the hours and days until they die somehow, so spend it working on making the most of whatever talent you have. I'm spending mine commenting on a blog post when I should be at the practice green. And tomorrow I'll be complaining that I can't break 80. :)
