Hi Phyco,

This comment concerns me a bit. I hope that this is nothing more than idle teen angst, but if you do find yourself thinking along these lines regularly, I'd strongly suggest seeing if there is some sort of local teen help hotline that you can call to speak with someone about these ideas.

Additionally, I'd like to stress that though the school years can be quite difficult (I certainly had my fair share of issues during my teens), life does improve as you and your peers get older. It is my sincere hope that any difficulties you are having pass.

Hi Melissa,

You're not doing anything wrong. When I set up the template, I designated that text as "placeholder" text -- it's there to give an idea of the look of the final document, but as it's not intended to be used as-is, Pages automatically removes it when you start to replace it with your own content. Nothing to worry about there, that's exactly what's supposed to happen.

As far as the TOC goes, no, I'm afraid I haven't. Honestly, I never produced any papers that actually needed a TOC; I added it to this template to try to be inclusive, but I didn't do much beyond the basics. Sorry I can't be of more help there.

Hi Ben,

I _think_ (though I'm not 100% positive) that those folders are usually created by the applications on an as-needed basis. If they don't exist already, you should be able to create the folders manually and place the template file inside them; when Pages launches, it should recognize the folder pathways and find the template file.

Hi Katie,

Once it's in the Templates folder, you should be able to start a new document (File > New) to open the Template Chooser, then look under "My Templates" at the bottom of the column on the left.

Hi Agnes,

The "Latin" is basically just dummy text that you are free to delete and replace with your own text. I did this so that my template wouldn't have one of my own class assignments included as the text. :)

The text itself is a famous piece of pseudo-Latin, known as "lorem ipsum" after its first two words, that has been in use in the printing industry for hundreds of years. The practice of using false text in for dummy layouts is called "greeking".

I don't know of any reason why the template would be asking for access to your contacts. My best guess is that the request is not coming from the template itself, but from Pages, probably as it tries to automatically fill in the "Firstname Lastname" text on the cover page. Mac OS X tries to help by pulling the information from your personal address card; unfortunately, the dialog box that appears doesn't give a good description of what the program is doing, or why it is asking for access to your contacts.

Update: I need to rescind my recommendation of Andrew Hatlestad. I haven't gotten around to putting up a post about this yet (and I really should), but we had problems of our own when we left. We do not recommend him as a landlord anymore.

"Products" is really vague, especially I think of Apple as primarily a hardware company and Microsoft as primarily a software company. If I count hardware only, than it's 5+ Apple/0 Microsoft. If I count software as well, then it becomes 5+ Apple and either 2 Microsoft (two copies of Microsoft Office) or 5+ Microsoft (if you break Office into its major Word/Excel/Powerpoint trio).

Either way, we're an Apple household. :)

I think it may be time to upgrade to a more recent version of Pages. I'm currently running Pages 4.1, so my guess is there's simply been enough changes over the two major revisions that your older version can't read the new version's files. Sorry!

The "Running Head:" text at the beginning of the headers on pages 2 through the end should stay. That is part of the required header.

Hi Tammy! The template automatically selects all the text in a section on purpose, so that you don't accidentally forget to delete any of my placeholder text and end up including it in your paper.

If you do want to change that, you can go to the Format menu, go down to the Advanced > option, and choose Enable Placeholder Text Authoring. All the text blocks that I've defined as placeholder text will be outlined in blue, and you'll be able to work with them directly.

Hi Jennifer,

It took me a couple moments, but I figured out what's going on. I'm not sure it's something that I can really "fix" in the template, though, as fixing it in this instance would create another issue.

To fix it for your case, go to the "Section" tab in the Layout Inspector (the second tab of the Inspector window) and look towards the bottom for the "Use previous headers & footers" option (example).

In the template, that box is unchecked for the Abstract page (so that its header is different from the title page), but checked for all the following sections. That's on purpose, as it means that you can just change the header on the Abstract page, and that fixes the header on every page except the title page.

However, when you remove the Abstract page, the title page header is now copied over onto every other section in the document, which is what's causing you headaches. All you need to do is uncheck that option for the body section after you delete the Abstract page. Once that's done, you'll be able to change the header.

If I were to change that setup in the template, then you'd have to change the header for every section after the title page, instead of just having to change it once.

I hope that all makes sense. Thanks for detailing what you were doing, that made figuring out what was happening much easier!
