hey I'm just speaking off the top of my head based on general knowledge of computers. My only real point was that this could open the door to a soft unlock method that would be very hard for apple to block.

If you can get it without the SIM inserted you could (assuming your reverse engineering skills were up to it) theoretically find a way to alter the os/firmware to simply not lock. Since locking is a logical operation I don't think you can have a purely hardware based lock. At the very least there has to be a machine instruction from somewhere to set the lock.

How to do this without multiple phones... If you could extract the firmware (I don't know if this is possible) and back up the os (definitely possible as all unix distros are just a bunch of files) then you could reflash the firmware and restore the os.

I'm glad you've had no problem with bells 3g. I was a bit confused b/c I thought they only got the network for the iPhone going in the last month or so. Or are you referring to their other older 3g network? If so then understand I am referrig to their brand new hspa network as being unproven.

I might be getting good service because of where I live but no dropped calls here.

As a consumer I really don't see a sane reason to pay more money for less data and marginally more minutes especially since I skype.

Okay i pay 65 a month for 150 minutes plus evenings and weekends, unlimited text, and 6gb data. This is under fido. No way am I switching over to any bell plan and I'm not sure why anyone would choose that pricig over Rogers/fido offerings. not to mention that bells 3g network is an unknown quantity as far as reliability and performance. Why did bell even bother with the iPhone? They aren't even in the game

A massive kick in the pants to anyone who had an iPhone turn by turn gps offering as well which is at least a couple companies.

As an iPhone user this is great!

As a potential developer I thought the approval process for the AppStore was supposed to avoid this kind of situation.

Yup

before I clean up I holster it, then wipe, then wash my hands. Not much different than reading the newspaper.

I also plug it in to recharge at night and put it on after getting dressed in the morning. But I go whole hours without using it (often when at work doing my job as a web developer, so, hmmmm...)

I'm not buying another phone at least until this contract I have now expires which is another 2.5 years. At that point who knows how things will be?

Open development platform is a big deal though. If the iPhone had that would we need all this jailbreak drama?

Actually Appulous/hackulous would also be a place to get the new client although I could never get the skype install from there to work. I'm sure that's just due to some technical detail I was unaware of.

Honestly I'm not sure I trust Rogers/fido enough to rely on them for tethering or voip over 3g. Come 2010 tethering through them will cost extra and I think they would do the same for voip over 3g

I trust the jb solutions for these more.

You would have to unlock to cross over though right? I'm not sure I can do that anymore (as opposed to jailbreak). This might stymie any attempt by Bell/Telus to steal customers and neutralize a lot of pressure to reduce rates.

no jb for iPhones of the future? If that is so then I may have bought my last one. There goes my plan to buy a mac book and start developing too.

maybe I'll justvride out the 3 year contract and see what's out there by then. There could be less restricted smart phones by then or a more permanent opening of the iPhone platform (xmlvm could be mature by then) or even an open source voip app that you could hack to work over 3g (the main reason I jb)
