As mentioned above, when PVD occurs, the vitreous gel may pull on the retina, causing tears in it. This usually tends to happen at an older age, although in people who are near sighted it may occur earlier in life.

Re: Chest Pain – Is It a Heart Attack?

Dipankar,

Generally the pain doesn't sound like it's from a heart origin - a heart pain doesn't get worse when you press your chest and you say that all the exams were fine. Also the fact that nitroglycerine doesn't help and that you can exercise with no pain both hint at the same conclusion. Still, I can't give medical advice without seeing or checking you. My best advice to you is that if you still fear you may have a problem, you should have regular checkups and exams to make sure everything is ok.

Re: Head Spinning (Vertigo) – What Causes It?

Ira, you should indeed visit an ENT specialist, as it sounds as if your problem may be ear related by the way you describe it.

Re: Head Spinning (Vertigo) – What Causes It?

Hi,

Vertigo can can happen, like stated in the article above, mainly due to problems in your ear or due to a stroke. A CT scan may or may not show if you had a stroke, since it usually doesn't do a very good job in showing the area of the brain where strokes that cause vertigos occur. The drug you were given is an antihistamine which can help with the symptoms.

I can't tell you if it could have been caused by a minor stroke or not as I know nothing about you (age, other diseases, habits, family history, etc.), but if it was indeed caused by a stroke taking aspirin isn't a bad idea.

I would go visit a neurologist and/or an ENT specialist to get to the bottom of things.

Re: Fibromyalgia – Chronic Pain and Fatigue

Good luck, and make sure to share the results and your progress!

Re: Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Deficiency – When Certain Conditions Can Destroy Blood Cells

Toni,

G6PD in a boy always comes from the mother. First of all, there shouldn't be any connection between your son's G6PD deficiency and his allergies. There are specific substances that can trigger a G6PD attack.
As explained above, G6PD is on chromosome X. Boys have an X and a Y chromosome. He gets the Y from his dad and the X from his mom. This means that any disease that's located on chromosome X comes from the mother.
Also, since G6PD is a genetic disease, your son probably had it from the time he was still a very small fetus, meaning your HELLP probably had nothing to do with it.

Re: Head Spinning (Vertigo) – What Causes It?

Hi,
If this feeling is new your mother should visit the ER and check if it isn't the manifestation of a new stroke. Even if not, she should be checked by a doctor to determine if the cause of her feeling is neurological, ear-related, or something else.

Re: Head Spinning (Vertigo) – What Causes It?

Jef,

Yes, you can. Since the source of your pain (as you can see in the article above) can be anything - from nothing, like you suggested, to something related to your heart or lungs, you are advised to visit the ER should the problem persist.

Re: As Seen on Grey’s Anatomy – Melanoma – You Can Avoid It if It’s Found on Time

Hi Slavi,

You should read the article. No one claims you should avoid the sun altogether. It's indeed important for us, for various biological functions. However, exposing yourself to the sun unprotected (unclothed, not wearing a sunscreen) during certain times of the day has been proven to promote skin cancer.
The answer above was meant to explain that protective measures aren't important only on summer time but also at other times of the year.

Re: Head Spinning (Vertigo) – What Causes It?

Hi Leena,

Like I tell everyone here, and like the article above says. This Might Just Be The Cause

Hi Dolcenazza,

In regards to hair loss, it can certainly happen with Hashimoto's. Hair thinning, on the other hand, isn't a classic sign of Hashimoto's (which is a disease of hypothyroidism - or poor functioning of the thyroid gland). It's more a sign of hyperthyroidism (over-functioning of the gland). In hypothyroidism, actually, the hair tends to be coarse.

I don't have exact data regarding how often is happens with thyroid diseases, but as with any case of hypothyroidism, you should get treated first and see if it changes things. If it doesn't, it could be that your hair loss is related to another cause.

Re: Neuroblastoma – The Most Common Cancer in Infants

Claire,

I'm very sorry for your loss.

As for your question, most cases of neuroblastoma aren't inherited and happen by chance.
