- One of the reasons behind my name is that, when the late Princess of Wales (Princess Diana, that is) was still around, she had always been one of the most beautiful women in the world. Or at least according to my father. He admitted that he joined in the bandwagon of parents in naming their daughters that after Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles. By the way, on the year I came into this world, Princess Diana was still around and she already had two sons (William and Harry). Initially in 1997 when Princess Diana got killed in a car crash in Paris, I hated it when my name was being mocked at by a handful of my classmates. How during those period of time, I actually hated my name. The name which my father gave to me. I admitted that during those times, I wondered if I should have a name change. I then learned to appreciate it better after my father told me why he gave me the name. And when my friends started to call me 'Princess Diana', I just took it as a compliment. I also just took it that I was being named after a famous royalty. Or as the former Britain Prime Minister Tony Blair once called her - 'The People's Princess'. But then again, the late Princess Diana was the reason why I have this name. While they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I still see myself being a little nerdy. I don't know, I had been wearing spectacles since I was six. Short-sighted. And I will be the first one to raise both my hands up that it's my fault that I am wearing spectacles ever since. That is another story by itself. But even if I considered myself a little nerdy, I am actually a late bloomer. Really. Life's never perfect, you know. Adding with the fact that I was on the brink of death a few times (I'm not joking) since I was two, I had always believed in this: 'Treat each day as if it's your last'. I think one of my former teachers said something like that. There are times when I think back how I came close to be knocking on Heaven's door more than once, I'm appreciative of what I had enjoyed and liked. Oh yes, I am actually a Singaporean of Chinese descent. My grandparents from both sides came from China. I do have a Chinese name as well. And as much as you may not believe it, I actually speak more Mandarin (or we call it Chinese here) than English in my daily life! That is my second language, with English being the first. Anyone who had been educated in the Singapore education system will know that one must at least master English and his/her mother tongue (which is usually the second language and it's either Chinese, Malay or Tamil...those three apart from English are the official languages here). English being given partly of our historical ties with our former colonial master, Britain and the role the English language plays in the modern world. And because of my Chinese ancestry, you get the idea why I have to know Mandarin. It's more than just a school subject. It's part of who I am, as much as I am a born and bred Singaporean. Considering according to my mother, I only start to speak Mandarin apart from English after I entered nursery school... Strange, but true.
