(Source: PercentMobile)

...and yes the feature phones of today were the smartphones of yesterday.

While I would not say QR Codes have quite gone mainstream yet -- looking at the composition of Delivr's 10K registered users -- individuals, charities, brands, and retailers worldwide -- the consumer demographics of those brands/retailers -- the increase of scanning activity over time -- and the location of those scans (no longer centered around major technical hubs)...

...I WILL say we are well on the way.

QR Codes from my perspective -- have arrived.

Note: We have been at this since 2004, with Delivr launching in 2009.

Re: http://blog.delivr.com/post/4883560959

Thank you for taking the time to test this code and your kind words.

Re: http://blog.delivr.com/post/4883560959

Thank you for the kinds words Christina.

Re: http://blog.delivr.com/post/4883560959

The orientation is SUPPOSED to be irrelevant. In the field though this becomes more a matter of each companies investment into their reader software. A company like i-nigma for example has very good on device preprocessing before decoding - which makes senbse as i-nigma started as a direct method QR Code company not indirect like ScanLife.

There is a balance as to how far you can push the design of a code and still have error correction compensate. No APP like you mention exists. You need to test and have experience.

Part science. Part magical arts.

Re: http://blog.delivr.com/post/4883560959

This code was an experiment to test scanning of designed AND rotated code. The "rotated" code scans immediately using readers from i-nigma, Mobiletag, AT&T, QuickMark, Qrafter, BeeTagg, and others.

The ScanLife software apparently can not handle reading rotated codes.

That being said, if you print the water drop code and turn it upside down or flip your phone 180 degrees before scanning (with ScanLife) -- ScanLife will then successfully read the code.

Re: Mobile Reading Trends At AVC

Yes, it's drop dead simple and no noticeable impact.

I will set up the account and email you the tracking code, instructions, and my contact info. This is what GA genius Avinash Kaushik had to say about us: http://percentmobile.com/p463

You will get an accurate view of your blog's mobile ecosystem -- devices, mobile phones vs non-phones (like tablets, gaming devices), carrier vs WiFi network, mobile specific referrers and referrer categories, trending, and more. GA is probably underreporting your mobile traffic as well as throwing US BlackBerry users into Canada where RIM's proxy servers are located.

All the action takes place on a single screen and the reports are extremely easy to filter and interact with.

Re: Why We at Delivr Disagree with, “3 Reasons to use MS Tags (not QR Codes)”

Thank for the kind words and well-intentioned conversation.

#1 - I'm not sure the goal is to get smaller.

#2 & #3 - QR Code services like Delivr ARE drop-dead simple to use. In Delivr's case 10K registered users are creating 100Ks of codes -- many of them bands, artists, students, real estate agents, professionals across various verticals but also major brands, retailers, publishers, and entertainment companies. The QR Codes they create can be scanned by any standards compliant QR Code Reader worldwide -- downloaded direct or via any of the platform specific mobile app stores. ONLY Microsoft Tag reader scans MS Tags - that is a major FAIL.

Delivr is a FREE service. This includes extras like a personalized Delivr address, editing, API, and QR Code scan tracking. For heavy commercial users, those that require deeper analytics, or wish to have their domain hosted we provide upgrades.

Re: "languages, GPS capability" - again this is matter of service offering NOT format. Custom design will be a fun topic to explore.

Re: Why We at Delivr Disagree with, “3 Reasons to use MS Tags (not QR Codes)”

The "beautiful" part deserves a post of it's own.

Re: Instrument Your Mobile Apps

@ Si Chen and @fredwilson concerning appeal of a mobile Wep App vs Native App.

On PercentMobile's blog we recently added this to the conversation...

Are Mobile Apps Derailing Your Social Media Strategy?

“Jessica is on her phone and sees an interesting tweet from a friend with a link to MTV. But when she clicks on it, she’s taken to a crappy, unoptimized web site, not the shiny app MTV she just installed.”

Social media giants Twitter and Facebook are deeply embedded in today’s mobile ecosystem through SMS, Mobile Sites, Apps/Widgets and OS level integration such as on the INQ1. They are imperative for marketing efforts of big brands. Messages in the stream often consist of a text message accompanied by a short URL linking to media on the web. URLs are always opened in the device’s main browser or an embedded browser in some twitter apps. URLs cannot be used to open applications, even if an application with the content is installed on the device. As such, the mobile browser is central to consume information pushed through social networks on mobile devices.

Neglecting the Mobile Web for a native App can thwart your Social Media Strategy.

Mobile Web and Social Media form a synergistic relationship. A brand that understands this will direct efforts to appear as best as possible on all major mobile web browsers. The contradiction we have been noticing is that there are brands with a large social network following, but no mobile compatible URLs, due to their efforts going solely towards mobile application development. Take MTV for example, with close to 900,000 followers on Twitter and close to 10,000 tweets. They also have a popular application on the Apple App Store. The trouble is that none of their links are mobilized. Any URL in their tweets brings you to a Web site solely designed for the desktop Web with a high reliance on Adobe Flash which is not compatible or does not work well on many mobile devices.

MTV is just one example that illustrates the need for brands to support their social efforts with an excellent, connected mobile Web experience.
