Yeah, he sorta mentions the switch in medium and then jumps to the results. I was kinda left thinking, "well, i think this is all a function of the medium, but how does it connect to the results." the birth of my hypothesis, which someone has probably already written a book about :)

I think we're using exclamations more because textual communications are now more frequent and more likely used for sheer utility rather than just expressing ideas, which means they're shorter (the longer the less efficient and the more e-mails to respond to the less i want to write to each) and there's more risk of misinterpretation (ex. terse responses are generally construed as rude). The misinterpretation is solved by emoticons and since utility is more desirable, the loss in nuance of expression that results from emoticons rather than actually expressing your feeling in words is outweighed by the utility of shorter, quicker communications. That's my hypothesis.

Glad Obama has decided to appoint a woman. The gender breakdown is kinda ridunculous. I mean, it's kind of hard to make the argument that where 24% of the federal bench is female, there isn't one female judge as good as the best male judge, and that it isn't kinda unsettling that 50% of the United States population accounts for only 1 out of 9 of the Supreme Court justices.

agreed. it's funny though because in class we just read a majority opinion that relies entirely on public policy grounds but that doesn't really lay out what those grounds are and the dissent was like, "uh... you can't just do that." anyways, none of this is interesting
