I suspect that the author benefited greatly by working at Google (not a startup) to be able to try a hand now at her own startup.

I find it laughable and condescending to read the author's concluding statements:

(quote)"So here’s my admittedly self-serving advice to all engineers working at large companies: Yes, it is a comfortable job. You probably don’t have to work very hard. There are lots of people to keep you company. But think about the cost of staying"
(end quote)

Perhaps the author had this experience working for a large company like Google :-)
I know many people who work really hard at large companies, enjoy their work and are rewarded for their work. I also know people in startups who don't really work that hard as some of my friends in large companies. Regardless of where you work, if you don't feel appreciated, or rewarded, or don't enjoy your work or your compensation, one would definitely look for other opportunities. Not because "now is the time to join a startup".

I agree with Harry Tormey's comments above. The trade-offs are different and it is a very individual decision for each engineer. I have worked for large and small companies and find it rewarding and enjoyable in different ways.

Re: Video - An Introduction to Presto

JD,
No worries. I agree this video is not suitable for non-techy audience. We will still take your feedback and work on it and hopefully will have something we can share for non-techy audience as well.

Re: Video - An Introduction to Presto

Thanks for the comments/feedback. We will try to improve it.

Sorry about my grammar ("very unique")...my bad (there I did it again) :-).

Some context about this video. This intro video was meant to explain Presto to developers with the idea that if you are a developer wanting to self-train using our training videos, this is probably the first 20 minutes of the training before you get into demos/examples.

All the training videos content can be seen here:
http://www.jackbe.com/enter...

Regarding demos/examples, I hope you have checked out some demos here:
http://www.jackbe.com/enter...

Re: Presto 2.7 is here!

On behalf of the Presto development team, I would like to thank all the Beta testers from the MDC who participated and provided us timely and very useful feedback. We have addressed many of your suggestions and findings, but perhaps not all. Rest assured that your feedback is going straight into the product development cycle for the next release.

Please continue to provide us your feedback so we can continue to improve the product to meet your needs.
Happy Mashing!

Re: Dion Hinchcliffe Presents on Economics 2.0 at Web 2.0 Expo | SocialComputingJournal.com

Here is the demo that I did during Dion's talk when he invited me during his "Mashup" section to demonstrate enterprise mashups with JackBe Presto. I did a live demo of mashing SalesForce and Website Analytics and delivering the mashup to Oracle Portal Server in approx 10 minutes.
