Think of Alberta like the Baltic states, which are independent countries because the United States says they are. Canada's options would be very limited if an independent Alberta and the US told them to pound sand. Having said that, it would take a special level on incompetence in Ottawa for a independence referundum to pass.

If the risk can't be modeled, it can't be priced, and the insurance market freezes. Until there is a negotiated settlement, the regime changes, or a soverign backstops the insurnace market, the status qou won't change.

Correct. And it's at least a two part problem. The ship owner has to able to pay war-risk insurance at an economic rate AND he needs to find a crew that will take on the personal physical risk. Particularly among the officers, this might be tough. They are already in short supply and very well paid to undertake low-risk voyages elsewhere.

On the flip side, the mullahs are still in power, some oil sanctions have been lifted and they've shown the capability to close the straight, which isn't just (or even mostly) a question of military capability. We could declare victory and leave the reopening of the straight to others who are much more seriously impacted by it than the US, but the likely result there is a permanent Iranian toll system and a new source of cash to fund all the malicious shit that they get up to.

The European NATO countries sans Turkey have an economy 5-10x that of Russia, depending on how you measure it, and 300M more people than Russia. The fact that they've let their militaries degrade so far that they fear today's Russia is nuts. This would be like the US fearing invasion by a country with the GDP and population of France.

It's a state by state matter in the US, with around half of states banning it outright a few others allowing it in specific circumstances where the marriage won't result in children and ~20 allowing it without restriction (yuck). No states ban 2nd cousin or more distant marriage.

What, exactly, is the problem? Instead of staying in place and sabotaging the administrations priorities, they resigned and freed up the billets for attorneys more aligned with the president's priorities. Is DOJ having problems hiring replacements, to the extent that they even want to backfill the roles?

It's amusing to see Brian Thompson referred to as a "healthcare CEO". It's almost as if some are reluctant to mention that he was, in fact, an insurance company CEO, specifically the CEO United Healthcare.

Wishful thinking. The big money in DC is DoD/IC related and they aren't going anywhere. It's one thing to fire some park rangers, quite another to cancel a program that funnels money into dozens of congressional districts.

Going back to Maryland has always been my preferred solution, perhaps leaving a non-residential District consisting of the mall.

Although if Maryland's population suddenly increased by ~700k, I'm pretty sure it would get at least one more electoral vote. Don't know who the losing state would be.

SES salaries top out at $225k The only folks making "a few hundred thousand" are doctors at places like the VA and the President who can make up to 400k.

They will find high-net worth federal employees have family money (this will become more common as the boomers pass and feds inherit), have a high income spouse (fed lawyer married to law firm partner making $2M+), and a few who were skilled/lucky with their investments. If you want to find employees on the take, they'd have better luck looking at employees going through a contentious divorce, substance abuse issues, gambling and debt. Look for sub-650 credit scores and take it from there.

only about 15% of federal employees are in the DC area.

It will be interesting to see how this gets walked back in the next couple days once, say, a bunch of VA docs and nurses volunteer to leave.

Yes, neighborhood schools within walking distance and sidewalks the whole way has worked well for us. Older son's high school is almost a mile away, so he'll ride a bike if he oversleeps. Much less stressful than the "school run" that many of our friends contend with 180 days a year.

That’s Arlington county and Alexandria. DC would love to have them, but I don’t think the Commonwealth would be willing to give up that chunk of its tax base.
