Most phone systems are not designed to handle that level of activity. Frustrating in a situation like this, I know, but same thing happens to websites when, say tickets to a popular event go on sale. Calling in won't really accomplish much anyway. It's a system problem, not a YOU problem. All they can do is work on it "in the field."

Re: US verizon

Not to rain on your parade but my husband's was down and resolved and now it's down again... I wasn't presuming anything. She is in her 80s. She could very well outlive all of us, but *if* she did not or *if* she chose not to participate (which she very nearly did this time around but then decided to after all when everyone else was in), the writers have created a very organic explanation for Violet to not be in the possible next movie for whatever reason. That she *might* sadly no longer be with us is realism, a fact of every life on this earth, and a REASONABLE POSSIBILITY, not an assumption or prediction. There is nothing at all rude or presumptuous about acknowledging that none of us will be here forever. She is a treasure, both Dame Maggie Smith and the character she portrays, and whether or not she wishes to be in any additional Downton adventures, I hope that she has many more years on this earth. However whether she is still blessedly very much alive or wanting to do more filming is not for either of us to decide. I was speaking merely from the perspective of Julian Fellowes and his crew that they have set the stage well to allow for any possibility regarding the character of Violet. Maybe don't be so angry when *you* presume what *I* meant or how *I* meant it, hmmm? Projection much?

Re: Downton Abbey producer on Maggie Smith's fate | EW.com

Not just giving Dame Maggie Smith an out but also in reality, she is 84 years old and nearing 85. There is a reasonable chance that she just might not be with us anymore if and when another movie is brought to life. This scene provides ample coverage for a myriad of possibilities.

Re: Em Busy Living: Monthly Reads | January

My to-read list is ridiculous. I can honestly say that the only time I miss snow is between Thanksgiving and New Year. After seeing all the pretty photos on social media, I've come to the conclusion that I only want to occasionally play in the snow or watch it through a window for a little while. I have no interest in being an adult in that mess. I'd rather endure six months of endless humidity than step into another slush puddle. Either way, I have to hide inside for months at a time. At least, in Florida, I don't have to shovel!

Re: Em Busy Living: Monthly Reads | January

I do about 95% of my reading via library borrowing, so it will probably 2018 before I get to anything that was popular in 2015! In 2006, I moved into an apartment with three drawers in the kitchen and I nearly wept in despair, because I had almost nothing and I was convinced there wasn't even enough space for that. I love almost all things technology, but for those things? I find it too easy to miss (or, ahem, ignore) notifications on the digital versions. I treat my paper planner like a bible though. (I cannot read on an e-reader either; need physical books in my hands, which I think is my brain telling me its had enough screens for my eyes, thanks.) I've never seen an episode of Downton Abbey. It's on my to-watch list, but it's not on Netflix, so it's waaaay down on the list of shows for now. I do know that one of my favorite actors from last season's The Good Wife has moved over to Downton Abbey, which makes me want to start watching immediately, but...back to the not on Netflix issue.

Re: The Holiday Numbers (Vol. 4)

I managed to have a cold for Thanksgiving (which meant not snuggling the newest niece to be born the day before Thanksgiving -- boooo) and then I came down with another one on January 3, which I totally blame on the person behind us at the movies on New Year's Day, coughing and sneezing all over me (the one time stadium seating is NOT a benefit -- yuck). Thankfully, both colds were super mild. And I'd rather have a cold than most of the other germy options, so there's that. Two colds in roughly a month should mean I'm good for while now, though, right?

Re: Teaching My Kids About the Heart-Breaking Reality of the Friendship Break-Up

I had a friendship break-up that started around January 2014 and concluded sometime in September. It sent down exactly like this: "She saw things one way, which incidentally was full of inaccuracies and things she had decided were true. And I saw things one way, which, at the time, I felt was the right way to see things." It still smarts. Sometimes, I think a friendship break-up is worse than a romantic one. But this past week, it seems I'm stumbling upon piece after piece on this very topic and they're speaking to me, so perhaps, I am finally reaching the point where the wound is beginning to finish healing. It's been one of my least favorite life lessons though.

Re: Question of the Day: When do you abandon a book?

I just recently struggled through a Binchy book! (Firefly Summer) It was never bad enough to put it down, but unlike the book I flew through immediately afterward and the one I'm reading now that I can't wait to pick up any time I have a chance, this one just dragged for me. I kind of wish I could have picked it up in the middle where she finally stopped "setting the stage" and actually started telling the story. My personal rule is that if I dislike the book at any point, I close it permanently. Also, if I book hasn't made me at least want to see what happens next within the first 30-ish pages or if I find I'm doing anything but wanting to pick up my current read, then it needs to be a discard. Life is too short and my Goodreads "to read" shelf is too full to waste time on books I'm not enjoying.

For the record, I only have two that I have actually abandoned, and six that I nearly did (and were rated with one star).

Re: What I’m Reading Lately: December/January

I read somewhere, a while back (I wish I could remember where so I could link to it!), that reading older fiction is really good for your brain, precisely because, as you mentioned, the writing style has changed and it makes your brain work a little harder to read something with a language style that isn't totally modern. I've been making myself read some of the older classics by tucking one into my reading rotation every so often!
