Maybe it's not that the book is "a work of genius," and we're just too dumb to plumb its depths. Maybe it's just a work of nonsense or possibly even satire, as Hazlitt demonstrates and hints at, respectively, in "The Failure of the New Economics."

Re: Woods at the Prom

I thought the same thing: "Apparently going for the young Tom Cruise look..."

Re: While in Congress, Gingrich co-sponsored 418 bills with Pelosi

Mr. DiLeo, I believe you have gotten some bad information here. Ron Paul was one of a very few members of Congress to stand by Israel in 1981 when Israel attacked a nuclear reactor in Iraq, voting against condemning the act and in favor of Israel's right to self-determination. He is against all foreign aid, including aid to Israel, yes, but also including the far more substantial amounts of aid given to Israel's enemies. Regarding foreign aid, he believes it's no more beneficial to those who receive it than welfare checks are to those who receive them here in America. For more information on his position, please see today's interview with Newsmax: http://www.newsmax.com/Insi...

Re: A Christian Case for Ron Paul

Dr. Woods, I'm sure you're more than adequately prepared to promote and (if necessary) defend Dr. Paul, but if you need any additional ammo, here's the link to the recent speech at the Value Voters' Summit: http://youtu.be/Wnj-5z9NJoY.... And here's a link to the transcript: http://www.eurasiareview.co....

As a Christian myself, I loved this speech. I think it demonstrates that he is a man of deeply-held faith, and that his faith is entirely consistent with his philosophy of governance. I appreciate his scandal-free career, his unfaltering consistency, and in our particular times, his strong and correct understanding of economics. As you mentioned in an earlier post, it's difficult to understand why he's not "at 95 percent in the polls." Knock 'em dead.

Re: What Ron Paul Could Ask Herman Cain

I tend to assume it's because he's a kind, polite, intelligent man on a stage filled with liars and fools. Calling his opponents out for their flaws may show he's right, but it wouldn't be polite. Also, standing there exuding quiet intelligence rather than sinking into the fray seems to be Dr. Paul's MO, and fits his personality more closely. He could school them all (and has, judging by this year's talking points), but he's too respectful to do it in public, for the most part.

Re: A Harvard Professor and His Clueless Tweet

Friedman included the pencil example in the first episode of his "Free to Choose" television mini-series without crediting Read. According to his twitter feed, Professor Rodrik is in the process of re-watching that series, so perhaps he was unaware that Friedman was borrowing someone else's work. Video of Friedman's usage is at 15:50 of "The Power of the Market" here: http://www.freetochoose.tv; an excerpt with just the pencil example is here: http://www.youtube.com/watc...

The example is used to illustrate the social cooperation that takes place through "the magic of the price system," not to suggest that a socialist country couldn't stick graphite, wood, and rubber together to make a pencil. My estimation of the intellect (and intellectual honesty) required to be a Harvard professor has steadily declined over that last few years...

Re: Jon Stewart bashes Democrats, not tea party, on summer debt ceiling debacle

Perhaps you were being hyperbolic. Upon reflection, do you honestly believe Ron Paul wants to help Iran get a nuclear bomb? Has he said that? I've heard him say he doesn't want anyone to have nukes, and I've heard him say that, given that Israel has 300 nukes and Iran considers Israel their enemy, it's not entirely unreasonable for Iran to be considering getting one, but I've never heard him say he wants to help Iran in that regard. Also, at least of the ones that I've heard, Ron Paul's views on Israel are (economically) that our economic aid allows them to put off making necessary economic reforms that would make them more efficient, and (militarily) that they have a very strong military of their own and don't need the U.S. to jump in every time they're threatened (paraphrasing here). Which of these are the crazy, anti-semitic views?

Re: the big 3-0

Happy Birthday, dude. And, really, solid food in general. The wave of the future is those intravenous food tubes. When I'm headed to work in the morning, I just want to strap on a bag of bacon, eggs, and toast and hit the road! Solid food is so last millennium.

Seriously, I'm often behind in the style category. In the 90s, I started wearing flannel LONG after the grunge look became fashionable, and continued wearing it LONG after it went out of style (read: still wear it). I would also wear Izod/Polo shirts to intentionally not be stylish around my flannel-clad peers. Not sure what I hoped to accomplish there. Now I pretty much just wear t-shirts when I'm not at work, which is frankly just style-laziness.

And, finally, that guy in the picture kind of looks like you around the eyes and cheekbone area. Any relation? Just curious.
