I'd remove the text decoration from the link and set the colour to match whatever your colour scheme suggests. I'd set the links to be bold and have the underline only in :hover.

Delineation of stories: I'd make each story appear in a div with a slight BG colour - try #EDEDED. Also for spiff factor put the CSS3 rounded corners on it. I'd use a radius of 10px. IE users wont get this effect but then again they're not expecting it, so your advanced users will get the benefit and your IE users will not know the better. Then put a margin under each of 10px to separate the BG colour blocks.

Readability: I'd set a max width of 600px on the story blocks. Full screen width is hard on readers eyes when going from extreme right to extreme left. This might be a matter of taste but there are definitely benefits to limiting this for the reader.

These are relatively simple measures but will take your look and feel very far very quickly. Good luck. Keep us updated on what you come up with. I do this kind of styling every day as I work with a CMS provider and a lot of outputs need styling. I like this discussion because you have different data than what I normally work with, but the principles are the same.

Re: Aziz is Bored

UH she looks pissed dude. You suggest that we imagine our leader going to your country and getting shoes thrown at him or her. That is incomplete. We must imagine that we've invaded your country as well, killed 2 million of your citizens (or more, if you want to do this proportionately), erased your government and installed a new one, and now we're doing a press conference. I'd imagine the Canadian Prime Minister might have a bit more than shoes thrown at him.

Re: What do you think of this ad? This commercial will give you all the hints you need.

Frankly it is a shitty, very transparent commercial that will only appeal to women with some confidence or maybe even anger issues. What General Mills is telling us is that there are a lot of people like this, and they have money and are deciding how to spend it.

Re: Internet idiots (Scripting News)

Good advertising has always been targeted. What you describe is yourself going to the supermarket to look at detergent. IF you think you're not being advertised to while you're standing in the aisle, you may not understand advertising as well as you might think you do. The new advertising is market presence - that means being in all the channels so that people know you exist when people do their regular searches.

Re: Online advertising is now dead (Scripting News)

You arrived at Amazon somehow :)

Re: What's next? (Scripting News)

Hi Dave,

I'm in Western Canada. I had class last night - a 3rd year university level Advanced Communications class. To give you an idea of the significance of the event last night, we halted the class when it was announced Obama had won at around 8 PM. We had been hitting F5 on our browsers the entire class before that, but even the prof stopped what she was doing to tune into McCain's concession speech. After, when I drove home, I listened to commentary on CBC radio and parked and waited to pick up my Fianceé from her meeting. I parked outside the building she was in and listened to the radio, waiting for Obama to come on and make his speech. I thought it was a bummer that I couldn't watch it, but then I looked across the street into some apartment buildings - many televisions had the Obama speech on, so video was sync'd with my radio and I got to watch it through some windows - thanks to some big screens that people own around here! In other words, almost everyone was tuned in, and people up here are ecstatic at the choice America has made, and honestly it has renewed our confidence in your country. 2004 was very hard for us to understand.

As it is, it is not very clear how Canada's relations with Obama will be. I understand there is a lot for him to do internally, so foreign relations would be less of a big deal. Still I don't think there's any doubt that Obama would attract a very large crowd if he were to come to any Canadian city. We had our fingers crossed for the American voters, and they really came through. America has spoken.

Re: Almost home (Scripting News)

It seems hard to avoid the arguments no matter where you are. That's how you know something interesting is going on in the States. I got into an discussion with a girl last night (at a house party in Victoria) for about an hour about the subject and we probably could have talked all night, no doubt. No one that I know is surprised by the Plain decision and everyone I know is laughing about it. It has even been pointed out that Canada.com is running an article on her and unwittingly showing a fake photo of her on vogue. It is pretty badly photoshopped:

http://www.canada.com/thepr...

Here is the original photoshopping job:
http://kodiakkonfidential.b...

Pretty poor as you can see. For some good entertainment, check out the last paragraph of the Budget section on her wikipedia page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

That's how she rolls. No less, her appointment to be running mate has earned her a spot on the rather popular "Hot Chicks with Douchebags" with none other than McCain, who, with this appointment, has earned himself the title of Douchebag of the Month:

http://www.hotchickswithdou...

Well the internet is really blowing up with it at this point, and it's only been a couple days. What is really scary is that if McCain wins the election, this person - who doesn't appear to have any positive professional accomplishment besides getting votes - would be in charge of the United States if Old Man McCain were to bite the dust. If you think Bush is bad, I have a feeling we have not seen the worst yet.

There are some pretty legitimate points out there about Obama, though. The truth is that there are always, within a politician, two internal politicians. The one who campaigns to get votes, and then the one who actually runs the show. We haven't seen the one who runs the show yet with Obama, since he hasn't been elected yet. So that being said, we really don't know what he is going to do once he gets elected. Yes he has the skills, but I am certain that there will be some surprises there no matter what. Administration and popularity are completely different points of focus. That is all I have to say about that.

The second point I'd like to make is that a lot of people are saying that McCain is going to point out the problems with the military operations right now, explain that he is a former PoW, and a veteran, and then say that he knows how to fix the problems. The problem with that is that being a PoW does not qualify you for anything other than knowing when your meals are and making sure you can be awake for those times. Being a veteran also does not qualify you to solve the complex problems that lay ahead of the United States. On the other hand, a lot of voters may gloss over these details (some might call it "logic") and muster only the energy to get to the voting station and vote for whomever seems most familiar to them. People make decisions in funny ways.

Well that's about all I can think of at the moment.

-D

Re: A taste of FlickrFan (Scripting News)

This is awesome!

Re: Landing at Logan (Scripting News)

What happened at the end there, did you have to stop looking at what you were capturing?

Re: Another tale of woe of Apple (Scripting News)

Totally unrelated but I have no other way of contacting you and I figure you might be interested in this story related to Comcast, traffic shaping, and the FCC:

"FCC chief says Comcast violated Internet rules"
http://bit.ly/fcc_comcast

All the best,
Davin

Re: Bit.ly launches today (Scripting News)

Caching the pages seems like a good idea from our point of view, but the content provider it might raise questions of ownership.

Re: To Obama: I'm not an ATM (Scripting News)

I have heard that the Obama camp will have some amazing online fundraising campaign for the election ... is this it? This reminds me a bit of when Jon Stewart was on Crossfire and criticizing the show's role in the theatre of politics. Tucker countered by criticizing the stories that The Daily Show (on Comedy Central) were trivial and silly.
