Even though you have it working, thought I would follow up. Unfortunately, after updating iTunes to the latest on my Acer XP laptop, I plugged in the iPhone, saw the New Hardware wizard, let it do it's thing and it installed "Apple Mobile Device Ethernet". Once it was done it worked like a charm!

Re: iPhone 3.0 MMS & Tethering: Part 2

Hi yes sorry for not getting back to you about the WIn XP test!

Not sure on how to speed up your connection. Sorry to hear you only have
EDGE. I am fully 3G here (thankfully) and rarely see anything less. I'm
afraid a lean browser is your best bet, maybe disable things like
javascript, flash, ads, etc to save on downloads. Could go as far as images
but I wouldn't recommend it. Maybe Chrome with some extensions to do the
above?

Re: iPhone 3.0 MMS & Tethering: Part 2

With your iPhone plugged into your PC, go to control panel and then
network. You should see the connection to the phone in there. I'm not
certain what it would be called, but you can right click, go to
properties, and you should be able find it in there. I don't suspect
this to be the problem area. If I can make it work on my xp laptop
I'll let you know.

Re: iPhone 3.0 MMS & Tethering: Part 2

Sounds like you are doing everything right. I can't see how this could be
different, but I did use a Vista machine, and I know the networking stack
was rewritten. Maybe there is some extra work in Windows that must be done?
On your PC for the web browser, I assume its just the "page cannot be
displayed" error?

It shouldn't be anything to do with the IP settings, but do you think you
would need to release/renew the DHCP settings? I wouldn't think you would,
but I don't know if Vista is doing some magic that XP does not.

Also, not sure what you mean by profile in "general" settings.

I would recommend updating your firmware to the latest iPhone OS version,
this should be 3.1.2. There was some important security fixes since 3.0,
plus if Apple were ever to help you they would likely want you to update.

I have an XP laptop available to me, I can try to tether there and document
what I do to make it work and hopefully help out.

Re: iPhone 3.0 MMS & Tethering: Part 2

Happy to help. Again keep in mind its Windows that needs the connection.
Make sure you have all other connections disabled, meaning no Wi-fi and no
ethernet plugged in. My guess is if all is working, Windows might use those
forms of connections before the iPhone. So bottom line, make sure Windows
has NO internet connection, then plug in your iPhone in tethering mode (so
via USB cable) and I would have thought Windows would have taken care of the
rest.

I did it in Vista which seems to be easier, you may need to use the
Networking applet in Control Panel to setup a new connection first.

Re: iPhone 3.0 MMS & Tethering: Part 2

Hi. I believe AT&T enabled tethering late last summer. It's not the
browser that needs the connection but your computer. Are you on
Windows or Mac? If Windows what version?

Re: In 3D, the “D” Stands for “Don’t”

Excellent point! Since I wrote this post I have seen more and more about 3D.
It just seems like a bandwagon to me and everyone wants to be a part of it.
I actually heard that Ghostbusters 3 might be filmed in 3D. While that might
be cool to see, it's the point that everyone goes 3D and it just gets
dropped that I find funny. I wonder how many other movies will take the
opportunity to mash a "D" at the end of their movie title just because it
happens to be the third movie in the franchise!

Re: Basement Renovations: Part 2, Floor and Walls: Update!

Yes you are correct. I believe that is even recommended in the
installation instructions. Thanks for your comments. I'm very happy
with the product and will use it again. It's warm and is even safe as
a temporary floor since it's hard to get slivers.

Re: Basement Renovations: Part 2, Floor and Walls: Update!

Glad to respond. Good point. I didn't really put up many walls and left most of the area open. But you are right, it could be an issue. The instructions if I'm not mistaken said fasten them to the floor did they not? I don't suppose the floor would move to much, so perhaps just screws into them (which for the most part is what I ended up doing) would suffice?

Re: Basement Renovations: Part 2, Floor and Walls: Update!

Hi Eric, I understand your concern. When I planned the framing for the
basement, I understood that some of the walls will be fixed and going
through the dricore and concrete was OK. I left areas where I can easily add
walls, but as you point out, it's not as easy to remove walls.

What I would suggest is to use Tapcon or concrete screws through the bottom
plates of your walls, or some kind of fastener that you can unscrew or
remove later so that you can take down the wall. You will then have to
repair the holes in the dricore board to make sure that it still acts as a
water barrier. Hopefully you only have to move a wall once making this an
acceptable solution.

Thanks for your comment.

Re: 5 Features For The Next iPhone

Good point. iCal API should open up new kinds of apps. It might be worthwhile doing a top 5 API improvements. I think having access to the call log might be interesting for other applications.

On the other hand, why the iCal? I find the app pretty good to use. Plus I have it synced with Google calendar, so whatever the API changes would be, they would still have to work with that, and MobileMe of course. Was there a particular class of apps you think would boost this?

Re: Google Yourself

Thanks Rob for your comment.

UPDATE:

1. On Google "david storms" gets my site as the 3rd link! That's incredible. I've been trying to promote my site more and I am excited that I've crawled onto the first page.

2. Further on that, "david r storms" gets me the top link, which I would expect considering my first name.

3. Tried this one, yet again not a chance. I haven't done one in months either, and there are a ton of sites out there.

I decided to give Bing and Yahoo a try (hopefully before Bing is the provider for Yahoo!):

Bing on "david storms" gets me the 3rd page. Oddly, there is a lot of "David Storm" (without the "S") out there that were first.

Bing on "david r storms" nets me the first link. Awesome, that's the brand I've been trying to build.

Yahoo on "david storms" gets me the 2nd link.

Yahoo on "david r storms" keep me at the 2nd link. Weird, to a Doctor David R from Storm lake???

Re: Apple Developing Social Networking App?

I think this could be a good thing, although a bit late. Unfortunately everyone is Twitter and Facebook, so some new system won't work, but integration into those services (or expanding what is already in OS X) would be great. I think I would use a social app client from Apple that posted to Twitter rather than getting the ad supported or paid version of a Twitter client (I'm using Tweetie right now on the iMac).

I definitely won't post each song I'm listening to as I'm listening to them, talk about a quick way to lose followers, that would just be annoying.

Almost certainly there will be an app for the iPhone as well as the desktop. It will probably tie into Mobile Me somehow, perhaps making that service more attractive to people.

I am considering using Flickr more now that I see it in iPhoto, so maybe Twitter as well if there was a button there?

Just throwing this bit of paranoia out there: what if you broadcasted proudly each and every song you listen to as you are listening to them, then the pleasant folks at the RIAA crack down on you. Even if you manage to delete all of those songs, you have a pretty healthy history up there in the cloud!

Re: iPhone Software Update 3.0.1

downloading my copy now

Re: iPhone SMS Virus

Update: read that 3.0 is vulnerable here:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-2...

Re: iPhone SMS Virus

What isn't clear is if it affects 3.0. As far as I know, unconfirmed news says it happens in 2.x versions. Does the timeline work for 3.0 actually having the patch in it? I can only assume someone as techie as Miller would have tried it on the latest firmware, thus we are all vulnerable.

There is one important thing to note here, while all of us iPhone toting fanboys are a target, the vector is still SMS, meaning my phone number (ah hem, not that I have an iPhone) would have to be known by the attacker, or a lucky random hit.

Re: Apple Has No Google Voice Love!!!

From Canada I've heard nothing about this. App store is the app store and if anything Canadians have the same store with less content, heck we don't even get Skype (without a hack anyway).

This has to suck to put time into building this app only to have it denied which points out a flaw with building products with the App Store, and that is how can you put all the effort (time and money) into the dev of an App only to find out when you submit it that it would be rejected?

My guess is that Google could have had a sit down directly with Apple and saved a lot of problems, I know Schiller said it was approved (allegedly I suppose) but the Goog didn't sit down with the right people on this one.

I'm sure they are busy at a web app as we speak that probably produces a lot of the same functionality anyway, just minus the tighter integration.

Now all I need is my GV invite and I'll be ready to report on it when it comes out!

david@davidrstorms.com if anybody is wondering!

Re: Palm Loads the Gun and Puts It To Head, Apple Pulls Trigger

This is shaping up to be a pretty interesting back and forth cat fight. Apple went ahead and blocked the Pre, now the Pre went ahead and updated their software so it works again. These guys definitely can't keep issuing updates, that will just confuse the masses. These guys are big enough that it would be a long court battle, and I think the Pre will continue to work with iTunes until a judge rules otherwise.

Maybe Apple can come up with the unhackable way to block the Pre, but seriously that would be tough and still remain compatible with all the other iPods and devices out there. I know Apple likes to leave old versions in the dust and move on and force their customers to update, but media devices I think are a bit different story.
