Here's the sector breakdown per comScore (US audience only): http://bit.ly/1o4TmWR

Re: The Cavalier Daily :: Thinking outside Pandora’s box

Thanks for the coverage of @8tracks, Jacqueline!

Re: The Hipster Music Index

Hilarious. DJs upload their own music from a hard drive and/or pick from SoundCloud, so there's no licensing restrictions.

The randomization happens when any listener tunes in a second or subsequent time.

Re: 10 Music Services You May Not Know About—But Should - by Chris McConnell

Thanks for the coverage! I'm the founder of 8tracks, and we're larger than many of the services you mention at the outset (Rdio, Slacker, MOG and Songza). However, we've not done much self-promotion as we've been largely bootstrapped since launch in 2008 and only recently (end of 2011) raised $1.2m in seed financing (Index Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz). Appreciate your helping us spread the word!

Re: ReadWrite – 5 Companies That Will Define The Future Of Radio

Have to admit, I'm a little surprised you left off 8tracks. I'm a little biased, of course, but we're definitely at the leading edge of internet radio.

Would love to tell more about the service, if of interest.

Re: This Week In Apps: 8tracks, Wah Wah Pedal, and the Next Lawsuit Waiting to Happen | Billboard.biz

Hi Anthony, thanks for the coverage - much appreciated!

We fall squarely in the "internet radio" bucket. The big differentiator in our approach to internet radio is that programming is created by people (a small subset of our users) rather than an algorithm, as is the case with Pandora and Last.fm.

Each "mix" has to be at least 8 tracks (though a mix can be as long as DJ wishes). Also, just for clarity, we don't currently offer any functionality around a personalized, crowdsourced stream, nor can users browse submitted tracks by genre or mode.

Re: 2010 Music Website Heat Map

That'd be excellent - would love to see the updated version with all of the additions people have noted. This is the best summary of sector competitors I've seen to date.

I like the Compete design too. Wish they were a bit closer to the real numbers but, as you say, the larger sites are prob closer to actual.

Would also be interesting to compare with comScore. I'm trying to track these down and would be happy to share with you. (I'm in process of creating my 'Positioning' slide for investor deck so topical.)

Re: 2010 Music Website Heat Map

Thanks, glad you like it. The 8 limitation is a floor (not a ceiling) tho many mixes are 8 tracks exactly. We daisy-chain the mixes together for a listener in several ways to form a proper internet radio experience. Tracks are uploaded by the DJs of those mixes.

Whoa, I didn't realize you used visits - I saw that but assumed you meant "visitors" (I didn't realize Compete provided visit count). Very cool indeed! Is there any way I could see what that'd look like (even if you don't publish)? I'd love to be able to show potential investors this visual, including 8tracks.

You're right about the latter - I used to compile comparative rankings per Compete on my old WP blog: http://davidporter.wordpres...

Happy to talk through any other points (dp@8tracks.com).

Thx R!

Re: 2010 Music Website Heat Map

Ryan - this is awesome.

Would love to see our service (8tracks) in the mix next time. Marketers and agencies assigning a lower value to the far larger segment of the ad industry focused on branding (rather than direct response) has some serious implications for traditional media in general, if that is in fact the rationale. (I'd characterize it as branding vs direct-response rather than social vs non-social, as social is a very small part of the branding side.)

Re: http://rafer.tumblr.com/post/810214170

Agree vis-a-vis AdWords, for example, but I'd think purchase intent exists largely in search and on certain vertical sites that transact in (or refer to) products rendered in atoms.

Most advertising is focused on branding rather than direct response, as I understand it. And, relatedly, most attention (online or offline) is invested on content where there is no purchase intent.

Perhaps the effective CPM for a brand-focused ad will settle at a level well below that for a direct-response ad? (Maybe this is even true today, I'm not sure.)

Re: http://rafer.tumblr.com/post/810214170

@rafer Wouldn't a less commercially dense property provide a better opportunity for an advertiser (in sense of less competition for visitor's attention)?

Or are you saying we're less saleable b/c we're just not accustomed to a bunch of ads on a social net and thus in a less of a "commercial" mode?
