I took a peek at it and you are right, the tool is really poorly positioned and looks to be just a celebrity trend thingy.

I wonder how much the company saves by shutting down these kinds of services? Would something like Yahoo Clues use a lot of people or server resources to keep it going?

It will be interesting to see what Yahoo looks like this time next year.

Re: Intermec PM43 – Command Language and Drivers

Thanks, Gary.
Hope things are going well!

Re: Intermec PM43 – Command Language and Drivers

Great, thanks Karl.
Next time there is a new product, the company should have you as the point man to explain some of this stuff.

Re: Winery Adopts RFID – Happy Workers – Better Products

Very cool way of combining NFC enabled ID Cards and smartphones. I agree with you that it is a receipt printer only.

Re: A New Push For UDI Labeling

I must say, I find it rather amusing that Congress produces a Bill for UDI 5 years ago then feels the need for yet another one to actually make the first happen.

If we really think that identification of medical devices will be a step towards better patient safety (personally, I believe this is indeed the case) then surely there should be a way to impliment it without all this legislation?

The marking technology and the barcode standards needed for UDI have been around for years - there is no reason for not moving forward with this. To be fair, many medical manufacturers have been marking their products this way for quite a while.

Re: Barcode Printer Manufacturer’s Warranty – Are You Covered?

One thing is for sure, in their efforts to reduce costs printer manufacturers are reducing the length of warranty coverage (from 3 years to 1 year in the case of Datamax, for example) and trying to move clients into buying depot repair contracts.

The warranties that still exist usually only cover "manufacturing defects" so often if a machine is returned for warranty repair, the owner ends up getting a bill. This is particularly true in the case of printheads - a rather expensive consumable item.

It is also important to recognize the time needed to return the printer to the manufacturer and wait for them to fix irt and ship it back. For printers that are needed as part of the owners process, an on-line service solution makes a lot of sense.

Re: Innovative “Use Within” Label Aids Product Safety

With that label, I could have proven that the Branston Pickle was still good to eat, even with a thick layer of mold on it.

Re: 2D Barcode Wars – Microsoft Tag

Nick, thanks for stopping by.

I agree with you that standards for printing codes and for the reader apps is a big issue with the QR community.

We are a barcode company and I've spent many happy hours verifying Datamax barcodes against the Department of Defense standards =)

I supposed that is a reason why it wouldn't be a good idea to use QR codes for critical applications, unless in a controlled environment.

Going to be really interesting to see how the various barcode formats develop and the applications they are used for.

Re: 2D Barcode Wars – Microsoft Tag

Hi Eric,

You have hit on one thing with MS Tag that is a concern to me.

I absolutely do not want MS (or anyone else for that matter) storing data about my location and what device I might happen to be using.

I certainly don't want that data being used for targeted promotions. To be fair, I'd be very happy to pay for a version of AdBlock for my mobile device to stop me from having to see any promotional material at all. Obviously with Google and Apple being the big mobile OS developers, that isn't happening any time soon =)
