I agree with all the above. Right now it looks like you'll need a 3rd party to vouch for the transaction... but this also means they'll bear the risk if there is fraud, disputed chargebacks etc...

In this situation, I don't see how Coinbase, in your example, becomes any different to Visa. Correct me if I'm wrong... but the large transaction fees in the payments system don't equal super-profits for anyone, right? Most of those fees actually go to paying for something (fraud, chargebacks, etc... ).

So here's the issue I see in Real World Retail... either bitcoin doesn't solve the problem AT the transaction speed required, and there has to be fees baked in on top (not dissimilar to existing transaction fees), or someone does solve the issue AND they gain huge network effect AND are able to charge a huge %.

Either way... it seems like the consumer/merchant is still paying a large % on transaction fees.

If this is the case... what's the incentive for moving to Bitcoin? (Real world retail only).

Are you forgetting the biggest impediment to broad consumer adoption in the Retail world? BitCoin transactions aren't instant. As I understand it, it takes on average 10-20min for the block chain to be updated with the details of a transaction.

This can likely be solved by a third party vouching for the payment on their network, but won't that 3rd party then just charge fees?

There was a study done recently by researchers on 'self-discipline'. In some room there was some test that required 'self-discipline'. There were two waiting rooms on the way into the test: A&B. In room A, there was a tray of cookies, and the people were told to help themsleves. In room B, there was a bowl of vegetables.

Anyway... the room A people did WORSE on the test that required self-discipline than the room B people.

Researchers concluded that your quota of 'self discipline' across different activities is finite.

So by that logic, the phone will follow the PC and the 'closed technology' platform will be usurped by an 'Open Technology' platform that commoditizes hardware and concentrates the benefits in the OS?

Its pretty easy to look back and see History repeat itself..... its much harder to look forward and say which 'strand of history' is the relevant one in the future.

Dude.. he's working off a low base these days.

This ad is certainly polarizing... I heard about it from the DJs bitching about it on the radio today.... but that is actually good.

A) People are going to talk about it.

B) Nike 's target audience is young guys... they are probably not very disgusted by his behavior... this ad gives them a reason to 'recommit their like of Tiger'. It gives them a reason to say why they are rooting for him again..

You put A + B together... then you have a very powerful campaign.
