A must-read for anyone who wants to understand this better.

Re: The New Entertainment Un-Bundlers

Did exactly this yesterday when I was switching between HBO Go and Sling TV to watch the NBA playoffs, via Google Cast. I only plan to have it while the playoffs are on and then cancel, but I imagine they factor in those bumps as nice-to-have incremental revenue from people who don't subscribe to cable.

Re: What’s Next In Computing

Interesting thought.

There's a mobile ad-tech startup called Unlockd (http://www.unlockd.com/) which is (kind of) trying this out via owning the content a user sees each time they unlock a phone. They just launched with Sprint, jury is out to see whether consumes will actually go for this, but the data behind it may very well wind up being more valuable than whatever CPM ad rate they can negotiate.

Anyway, as James says, data bartering. Cool idea.

Re: The Basic Income Guarantee

Welfare in America and welfare in Europe, Canada or Australia are worlds apart. Very little Facebook engagement actually occurs on a brand's page, most of it comes in an individual's news feed where they comment on or like a post (if they do anything at all).

For the vast majority, it is a one-on-one encounter, but for the brand, it happens at scale.

Re: Turn your tweets into toilet paper with the new startup, Shitter

"When you really think about it, $35 is cheap for a product that’s nearly performance art in its simultaneous embrace and mocking of our social media obsessed world."

Ben, could not have summed it up better myself, you nailed it.

Thanks for sharing it!

David
Founder - Collector's Edition

Re: http://socialadvocate.tumblr.com/post/18538627575

I'm so predictable!

Re: http://socialadvocate.tumblr.com/post/18538627575

"Hustle is the most important word. Time spent with the ones we love versus endless dividends paid to shareholders.

The two don't have to be mutually exclusive, but the way we run the world right now skews us much to far to the latter end of that scale, the net result being an infinitesimal and short-lived benefit to a handful of people, one that doesn't actually bring with it long-term happiness.

It's a little hippy for a VC blog I know, but for me it is all part of a larger conversation about the things we value, and how we start to shift society as a whole to a more balanced point of view on what constitutes genuine success. Once we create demand among society for that new way of thinking, our institutions will have to follow suit.

Re: Understanding Kickstarter

Prior to that, we need to agree on new definitions of prosperity and wealth. I firmly believe with the pace of change these days the people who will be left behind are the ones who can't move until they're absolutely certain; competition being what it is, analysis paralysis just isn't an option any more.

There is a level of due diligence required for any undertaking, but I think it comes down not to quantity of research, but quality, and asking the right questions gets us to a place where we can make a move faster.

You might like to read Eric Ries' The Lean Start-Up which focuses on this sort of thing - asking the right questions, forming hypotheses and then testing them with changes to your product, service, or even life. I read it just prior to Christmas, and it is one of those books which is never going to be too far out of sight.

Take care, and thanks again!

Re: Sunday Debate: Is Social Peaking?

Thanks Andy!

Re: Sunday Debate: Is Social Peaking?

If you look at Facebook's recent platform changes as far as brands are concerned, you will see them making moves that suggest social saturation. Their recent pushes towards "People are talking about" metrics is the first time they haven't just pushed total number of fans. They're acknowledging that even the world's biggest brands have a ceiling, and if those marketers don't continue to see growth they can put in front of their bosses, they will have to move their money elsewhere. So, now we see "talking about" metrics being the be-all and end-all.

As for not playing Call of Duty over HTML, this is a problem I'm solving right now.
