Anybody who claims the "progressive blogosphere" is a significant part of Obama's base is seriously misinformed. A veteran diarist recently called out kos and the rest of the Kossacks by posting some of their comments hating on Obama when their original choice John Edwards was still in the race. I've also noticed that very few diarists are linking to Al Giordano anymore since he bitchslapped Glenn Greenwald for accusing all of lying about his sources when Al told him in a blog comment that the USA can get around FISA through their date collection sources in other lands.

The PUMAs and McCain trolls are having a grand time over at kos stirring up much strife about FISA as a way to embarrass and undermine Obama. And the Kossacks seem more than willing to play along rather than consider the source.

An interesting thing is going on at Daily Kos right now.

Apparently a number of diarists have become as fed up as I am at the constant divisiveness and bickering showing up in the community and have started spamming the list with diaries consisting of short messages of support for Obeezy.

I couldn't miss out on the fun so I had to get my bid in as well.

So much for the tinfoil hat. LA Times has jump started the Hillary for VP meme while some group of idiots put an ad in the Chicago Tribune demanding a roll call vote and nominating speeches for Hillary at the convention.

Also, Bill's first public statement since Hillary conceded contains praise for McCain's energy plan.

Belle, I have a question for you. Do you feel that the economy, education, health care, crumbling infrastructure, global warming, overdependency on foreign oil and the war in Iraq are LESS important than FISA, or are they all of EQUAL importance? I feel they are all of equal importance and I have no intention of harping on one and jeopardizing our opportunity to achieve the rest. Even if Obama would have sided with us on this FISA his vote would not have turned the tide in the final tally. I happen to believe in the old cliche that says "there's no use crying over spilled milk." The votes have been cast, the bill has been signed. We still have time to fight for the rest of the goals I've listed, but we can't waste any more valuable time debating FISA after the fact. So let's move on, shall we?

By the way, have you ever heard of a little thing called "COINTELPRO?" I believe blacks learned more than enough about civil liberties when that was exposed. I am still waiting for someone to explain to me how removing our ability to sue the telecoms in civil court actually violates our civil liberties.

This is race baiting. Your angered response is exactly what they were hoping for.

I have pretty much come to the conclusion that this smear campaign is not only an attempt to provoke an embarrassing response from Obama but also to create so much anger and hostility in the rest of his black supporters that we begin to lash out at anyone who doesn't agree. Its sad as hell that a lot of people not only don't care about the repercussions from this they also feel that their opinion trumps anything that might come from the black community itself. I am not surprised by their response, I have seen hints of it ever since Hillary dropped the hammer on MLK in New Hampshire. Yet, we must translate our frustrations into something positive rather than let it get the best of us. If we just start clowning everyone in sight, we end up helping the right wingers build their case. Instead of taking the bait, use it as an opportunity to educate.

Of course we don't stay silent. That would be absurd. I see it as an opportunity to explain WHY we are so outraged. I hauled off on a few of the snooty responses over at Daily Kos myself until I finally had to step away from the keyboard for a while to think of a better way to approach this. Upon reflection I realized this is just another example of the media trying to use Obama to make a profit. The New Yorker was well aware of the controversy the image would generate, but like so many others they allowed the lust for financial gain to overrule their common sense. The longer the issue stays on the front page of every blog the more money we generate for the New Yorker and every site that links to the illustration.

As much as the cover pisses me off, I am much more concerned about how these controversial statements and images keep popping up at exactly the right time to take the focus away from the real issues and the candidates' true positions on each. If we spend too much time and energy on this magazine cover we help the media bury the real news. Obama penned an excellent op-ed in the New York Times today but its being swallowed up in the controversy over the cover of a magazine most of us will never bother to read. Last week it was Jesse Jackson's idiotic statements on Faux News distracting from the McCain campaign's "whiner" and "social security is a disgrace" comments. There's an obvious pattern developing here. Whether its deliberate or coincidental is left up to us to decide, but every controversy distracts from the real stories that get trampled in the stampede to cover the gossip and innuendo. I am in favor of voicing our strong opposition to the imagery by emailing the magazine and its sponsors; I am not in favor of letting it distract us one more time from what is most important in this election.

The media promotes race baiting because they knows it helps sell their product and improve their profits. If we keep letting them goad us into fighting about every non-issue they pipe into the election cycle we run the risk of letting them sell us another shitty president who'll end up making things worse than his predecessor.

All BS aside, the latest media meme about Obama is officially: "he won't let us laugh at him." I just had to sit through Tweety and Dana Milbank criticizing Obama having "thin skin" about the New Yorker cover. Apparently in MSM land you can't type "tasteless and offensive" in your response unless you're enraged and foaming at the mouth. Meanwhile, McCain tells the most vulgar and offensive jokes known as a way to avoid answering questions. I guess this isn't an election campaign anymore its "Last Comic Standing."

That $72 million COMBINED number is incorrect. That's Obama's total from June + cash on hand. The DNC has another $22 million which means with Obama and the DNC combined he has $92 million, not $72 million.. Plouffe's correction can be found at the bottom of the page the letter is posted to on the website.
